NC MLAs might have no option but to mask their discontentment as administrative or developmental grievances in their constituencies.
I read a local journalist’s tweet on this subject and apart from a very ad nauseam tendency of perpetual self-validation and self-obsession, what he has said is not entirely untrue.
The discontentment among NC’s legislators is very real. At the root of this massive discontentment is the limited, country-club buddy system which has been the CM’s biggest detraction, weakness and point of criticism traditionally. This chronic tendency to allow two to three individuals/friends/colleagues to attain a grossly disproportionate importance and optical space - disproportionate as compared to the other legislators and also disproportionate to their own efficacy and merit (lack of it) - seems to be at the root of the massive brewing unease.
Despite having chosen a different path in politics and being a frequent critic of the National Conference, I have always wished Omar Abdullah well as a friend and been honest with my criticism in person even when I was in NC. And I will continue to do so even when we are not on talking terms anymore.
I have often publicly stated that Omar Abdullah is an exceptionally perceptive and bright person. Unarguably one of the brightest minds I have known. And it is therefore an even greater tragedy that he has been ensconced in a spiraling, self-sustaining, parasitic vortex of sycophancy and mediocrity all his political life, under the fig-leaf of “loyalty” and “friendship”. Or perhaps social convenience or a ‘like-me’ syndrome where people around him have been known to alter their dietary preferences and lifestyle choices to copy him.
Then the domino effect - the chain reaction - of mediocrity attracting mediocrity - as a means of survival. Of sycophants shopping for more sycophants - and a symbiotic relationship between sycophants. An entire self-propelling wheel of sycophancy.
Despite political differences, I naturally have a lot of friends in the National Conference, and I speak to many of the first-time legislators (who are personal friends and former colleagues). When they say they feel “invisible” and “second-grade”, you can’t escape this feeling of Deja Vu. It takes you back to the election of 2014 and the reason for NC’s rout in the LS polls a year earlier - where Dr. Farooq Abdullah lost the first election of his life and NC lost all three parliament seats to the PDP.
Same factors, same sense of “second grading” among the legislators. This feeling of being categorized as children of a lesser God. Exact same things at play AGAIN. Exactly the SAME people at the core of this discontentment and the reason for this disconnect. The SAME people who kept lying to him in 2013 and 2014 and are doing it all over again - giving him a false sense of normalcy and the proverbial rosy picture. And the consequences will be the same - mark my words. The next LS elections will prove it first, setting the ball rolling for what’s to come in the next Assembly elections.
Not every MLA will be a natural athlete to endure marathons, or enjoy skiing or use the same creamer in their coffee as the CM - but some of the MLAs who might not be great at pretending to be like him and like what he likes - will nonetheless hold the key to 2029. And the history of NC’s gains and drastic declines tells us that this can be a very STEEP slope.
And the sheer massive size of the mandate comes with a cost - the tolerance of his legislators will be inversely proportional to their large number in the assembly. They are openly expressing a sense of dejection and it is for the CM to make amends. He may choose not to at his own peril.
And if this tweet finds its way to the CM, the same usual suspects will ascribe motives to this or perhaps discredit what has been said. And that’s totally fine and expected. It would actually validate what has been said here.
TIME will prove what I have said right.

The CM can and should be held to account on issues of governance and on his politics BUT to expect him — or any public official — to be at work 365 days a year is churlish and petulant.
Unreasonable criticism doesn’t serve the welfare of the people, it trivializes it.
Rumour has it that if you park your cycle on a road long enough, an MLA might turn up and inaugurate it.
On a serious note, this inauguration obsession is getting a little out of hand.
Just saw a video of an MLA inaugurating a bedside monitor at a health center.
Speechless.
