Wrong Message, Wrong Messenger, Wrong Medium: #Ethiopia Opens An Old Playbook
In an opinion piece for @AJEnglish, Mulatu Teshome Wirtu, the former President of Ethiopia, argues for urgent action to prevent renewed conflict in the Horn of #Africa, particularly due to the destabilizing actions of #Eritrea|n President Isaias Afwerki.
The piece outlines the region's complex history and its strategic significance, highlighting Eritrea's alleged long-standing involvement in regional conflicts and Isaias's inclination toward warfare as a means of asserting influence.
1. Wrong Message: the “region” or “subregion” as the Horn of Africa is sometimes known, is a peninsula that includes #Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, #Kenya, #Somalia, #SouthSudan, #Sudan and #Uganda.
Any fair reading of the region’s recent history shows that the problems each country is experiencing are part and parcel of each country’s unique history, population makeup and governance.
Eritrea President Isaias Afwerki did not start the multitude civil wars that Ethiopia hosts whether that is from Oromia, Amhara, Tigray, Benishangul, or Ogaden. Nor did he, at a point of a gun, force them to adopt the most combustible form of governance—ethnic federation—in Ethiopia.
Nor did he instigate the current war in Sudan, nor its past wars in Darfur, Juba or Eastern Sudan. Nor did he trigger the 1991 Civil War in Somalia, nor the secession of Somaliland. Nor is he responsible for the choice Djibouti made to be a permanent colony.
2. Wrong Messenger: Former President Mulatu Teshome is a product of Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic (EPRDF), the party that brought “ethnic federalism” to Ethiopia. Crucially, he was president between 2013-2018, when Hailemariam Desalegn* was Prime Minister. This era marked perhaps the absolute nadir of Eritrea-Ethiopia relationship when Ethiopia’s response to global appeal to vacate sovereign Eritrean territories was a defiant “make me!”
A former president is supposed to use his experience and good name to relentlessly push for peace, no matter how discouraging it appears, not be the mouthpiece of those providing him his pension. Not exactly profile in courage.
3. Wrong Medium: the former president’s opinion piece appeared in a platform with a large following in the U.S., UK, Middle East and North Africa (MENA), South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. It would have been a perfect platform for Eritrean govt’s rebuttal; however, the government of Eritrea has had many run-ins with the media outlet and the president’s selection is only likely to exacerbate the siege mindset the Eritrean gov operates in.
* it should be noted that this is not the first time #Ethiopia PM @AbiyAhmedAli has used former officials to push war. In Nov 2020, Hailemariam Desalegn wrote an article for Foreign Policy dismissing those calling for peace between the federal government and TPLF.
