2026 is a special year for queer history in Canada and the world. 🇨🇦🏳️‍🌈

On January 14, 2001, Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, in a bulletproof vest and amid angry protestors outside his church, officiated what would eventually become the world's first legalized same-sex marriages at the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, with the couples Anne and Elaine Vautour, Kevin Bourassa, and Joe Varnell.

"We're walking in the footsteps of those who came before us," said Kevin Bourassa in a subsequent interview with the CBC.

25 years later, the happy couples are off on their overdue 25th anniversary honeymoons. Farrah and I were deeply honoured to be asked to stand in for one of them at MCC Toronto's historic anniversary celebration this past Saturday. We renewed our vows with our 6-year-old son as ringbearer. I was moved throughout the celebration. There was so much love in the room, a reminder that we can triumph over oppression through community activism. 

Thank you to Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, Rev. Deana Dudley, Rev. Junia Joplin, and the entire MCC family. Thank you to trailblazers like Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo, who officiated Ontario's first registered same-sex marriage in Canada. And to the countless couples, activists, lawyers, and community leaders who fought for marriage equality. 🙏🏼❤️

My dad walked me down the aisle in 2016. He's since passed, but his presence was strong this weekend. He would have reminded us that Canada is the greatest country in the world and that we have come a long way. But he would also say that there is more to do, and that we can never take anything for granted.

The attacks on 2SLGBTQ rights continue, especially against trans and non-binary people. So yes, let’s celebrate our wins and remain steadfast in our resolve to defend them so that we can pass them along to the next generation and every generation after.

just thinking about this and i’ll probs have more detailed thoughts when i do my next rewatch but the camera work in this show is so clever at creating moments of intimacy that really make it easy to understand how they could spend so many years chasing moments where it did just feel like they were the only two people in the world and all the eyes on them went away during those moments.

Four years ago I wrote my inaugural poem The Hill We Climb. Both when I wrote it and performed it, I did so while continuously reflecting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Coretta Scott King’s legacy. I was (and am) blown away by how my words reverberated around the world; if anything, it proved to me that we honor King’s dream, by daring to dream big, and by, most importantly, daring to dream together. Only then will the loving fantasies of our better nature transform into reality. The work and fight for the dream persists, and what’s more, it is not just a fight, but fate—that perhaps we are as destined for this time as it is destined for us. What a worthwhile, powerful calling only we can answer. Here with you in the hill and the climb, and whatever light lies beyond, whatever light lies within.
