Today, India takes a defining step in its civil nuclear journey, advancing the second stage of its nuclear programme.

The indigenously designed and built Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam has attained criticality.

This advanced reactor, capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, reflects the depth of our scientific capability and the strength of our engineering enterprise. It is a decisive step towards harnessing our vast thorium reserves in the third stage of the programme.

Reviewed the progress of key ocean technology projects being implemented in the #Lakshadweep group of islands.

The focus is on strengthening water security and advancing sustainable energy solutions for the island territories.

The upcoming 'Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion' plant will have a desalination capacity of about 100 cubic metres of potable water per day and will operate independently of diesel-based electricity, thus reducing fuel dependence.

Besides ensuring 'ease of living' for the locals, the ongoing projects will also enhance the facility for domestic and foreign tourists, whose influx has increased manifold following PM Sh @narendramodi 's visit in 2024.

#NewZealand Minister of Science, Innovation, Technology and Education, Dr Shane Reti, currently in New Delhi for the ongoing "India AI Impact Summit 2026", called on for one-to-one bilateral talks, followed by delegation level talks.

Referred to the warm relationship between PM @NarendraModi and New Zealand PM  Christopher Luxon, that has created a conducive environment to elevate science and innovation cooperation to a new level.  

India and New Zealand have a broad canvas of potential collaboration, the partnership would benefit from a focused, outcome-oriented approach. 

The Indian delegation cited progress in ocean sciences and desalination technologies, including initiatives in island territories such as Lakshadweep to ensure potable water security. The New Zealand side too shared its expertise in ocean related geothermal energy and renewable systems. Both the sides agreed that combining strengths in ocean energy, geothermal research and climate-resilient infrastructure could yield mutually beneficial outcomes.

"India has a coastline of around 11,000–12,000 km, of which over 1,000 km lies along #AndhraPradesh, making it a natural hub for maritime economy and Blue Economy roadmap rolled out by PM @narendramodi.

The Eastern Coastal Margin of India is geologically diverse and holds significant potential for hydrocarbons, seabed minerals as well as oil and natural gas, largely due to heavy sediment deposits from the Himalayan River systems.

The Visakhapatnam coast, therefore, represents a versatile marine resource base that can significantly contribute to India’s energy security as well as Blue Economy, and the newly inaugurated #CSIR-NIO (National Institute of Oceanography) facility will act as a key scientific backbone for this.

CSIR-NIO is already working in close collaboration with ONGC, Oil India and other stakeholders, and is actively supporting sectors such as pharmaceuticals, ports, thermal power projects and fisheries".
