What a way to start a Monday morning ( IST). What an extraordinary moment for democracy!

In Serbia, a fearless student-led movement has defeated Aleksandar Vučić after nearly two years of protests against corruption, violence and authoritarianism. Young people took to the streets, mobilised a nation and converted public anger into electoral victory. 100% democratically achieved success.

Students didn’t just protest. They changed history.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has defeated Flávio Bolsonaro, denying Donald Trump another ideological ally in Latin America. Most thought he had no chance after he lost the first round of votes.

Two countries. Two powerful democratic verdicts. One unmistakable lesson: political power is never permanent. I have been saying this for long: Don’t fall for the braggadocio on “ We will rule for 50 years etc” from BJP’s Chanakya. It is utter nonsense emerging from vulgar arrogance.

Liberal democracy desperately needs this resurgence. Across the world, independent institutions face pressure, dissent is throttled, minorities are targeted and political strongmen increasingly behave as though the Constitution is their personal toilet-roll. Divisiveness has been weaponized, and the critics demonized. It is precisely why India’s Gen Z are on the streets as well; To protect a flailing democracy gone sideways.

But let us not get carried away. Having been in the opposition for long, I am circumspect although prodigiously sanguine. The challenges remain. Benjamin Netanyahu’s political future in Israel and Marine Le Pen’s movement in France, which is experiencing a violent turmoil, deserve close attention. They could still win, and we know what the repercussions of their exclusionary politics could be.

The silver lining could still be Donald Trump’s likely annihilation in American midterms. A Republican defeat which is being forecasted by most political pundits could dramatically change the global political conversation. But stranger things have happened in America. Remember, the world’s richest man with enormous media clout is funding the Trump campaign. Propaganda is the far-right’s go-to-brainwashing detergent.

But for now this morning, from Belgrade to Brasília, the message is electrifying: Fear can be defeated. Young people can change history. The opposition can overcome the institutional capture. Democracy can fight back.

The future belongs to citizens, not strongmen. Has the democratic awakening begun?

Former CEC S.Y. Quraishi calls the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls “nothing less than a fiasco” and “a scam” driven by “complete bad intention.”

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview recorded for the London Vārta with me in London, Mr Quraishi said the exercise finds no mention in the Constitution, the Representation of the People Act, or the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. “For the last 75 years, the Election Commission has been updating the electoral rolls every year,” he noted. “All three of these laws apply in this case, and none of them contains any provision for an SIR.”

He highlighted the one-sided nature of the process: “In today’s controversy we’ve seen deletions, deletions, deletions everywhere. There should also be additions somewhere. If people have migrated from here, they must have gone somewhere. But all these migrations were happening in thin air. Nearly 130 million migrated from where to where?”

On the stated rationale, Quraishi pointed to the launch in Bihar: “When this exercise began, you may recall, in the press conference in Bihar the CEC said that there are lots of infiltrators here, and to catch the infiltrators we will do a Special Intensive Revision. They made 80 million people run around, because they introduced several new things. To this day it is not known how many infiltrators were caught. Please tell us that. That’s interesting. After the revision in Bihar, it never came out how many infiltrators there actually were—the ones for whom, in a way, the whole exercise was being done.”

Ayodhya Archaeology trivia: Eight archaeologists defended the Muslim side in the HC, and the foremost of them was Suraj Bhan, a committed Marxist. He was given five days to inspect the undergoing excavation. He along with Irfan Habib called the underlying structure a mosque.
Fact 1. Bhan stayed in Ayodhya for only three days. Immediately after his return to Delhi, he sat in a press conference with Habib, Prabhat Patnaik, Rajeev Dhawan to denounce the ASI. Except Bhan, none of them were archaeologists.
Fact 2. When Bhan was asked in court whether he examined so and do findings that he questioned in his statement, he said he was at the site only for three days. It was pointed out that he could have used the rest of two days to inspect those findings, Bhan replied he didn’t have time.
Fact 3. Why did he call the underlying structure a mosque, Bhan was asked. He replied had the Hindu side not called the structure a temple, we would not have called it a mosque. It was merely a polemical juxtaposition, devoid of any intelligent argument rooted in the science of archaeology.
Fact 4. Did he go down the trenches to see the central wall that he dubbed it as the part of an earlier mosque? No. He didn’t see it because he was short of time.

Former Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri must answer as to why he was meeting Jeffrey Epstein, even in an Ambassadorial capacity. I am given to understand that the Government of India will try and justify this engagement as "diplomatic necessity."

However, the terms and content of these disussions must now be made public. I am certainly hopeful that Ambassador Puri was not aware of any of the horrors of Epstein Island. I urge him to clarify his stance on the matter.

The Sangh did not dilute its ideology. JS did. Gandhian socialism of ABV for example. After the 1984 rout, the BJP appointed a committee under Kedarnath Sahani to study the causes. The report traces the journey of the JS and how and at what cost the party made compromise. It blamed the socialist slogan like Gandhian socialism which confused the core base (Sangh). ABV was unable to clarify between the ideals of cultural nationalism and GS. In fact after returning to power in 1980 Indira made overtures to the Sangh. There were three private meetings between Rajiv and Bhaurao Deoras. The BJP under ABV didn’t find Sangh ideas attractive. For seven long years the party kept itself away from Ram Janmabhoomi.
