Supreme Court Justice Prasanna B. Varale raised concerns over the state of education and said that even 0.1% of the funds allocated for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela could make a significant difference to Maharashtra’s government schools.

During a visit to a school in Maharashtra’s Dhule district, Justice Varale noted that the Nashik Kumbh Mela is estimated to have a budget of around ₹32,000–34,000 crore. He said that allocating just 0.1% of this amount — around ₹32 crore — to schools could have helped prevent the closure of 100 to 125 Marathi-medium schools.

Expressing concern over the declining education budget and the poor condition of government schools, Justice Varale said he had no objection to the government spending on development projects or religious events, but stressed that essential services such as basic education should not be overlooked.
