There will be no AI jobpocalypse.

The story that AI will lead to massive unemployment is stoking unnecessary fear. AI — like any other technology — does affect jobs, but telling overblown stories of large-scale unemployment is irresponsible and damaging. Let’s put a stop to it.

I’ve expressed skepticism about the jobpocalypse in previous posts. I’m glad to see that the popular press is now pushing back on this narrative. The image below features some recent headlines.

Software engineering is the sector most affected by AI tools, as coding agents race ahead. Yet hiring of software engineers remains strong! So while there are examples of AI taking away jobs, the trends strongly suggest the net job creation is vastly greater than the job destruction — just like earlier waves of technology. Further, despite all the exciting progress in AI, the U.S. unemployment rate remains a healthy 4.3%.

Why is the AI jobpocalypse narrative so popular? For one thing, frontier AI labs have a strong incentive to tell stories that make AI technology sound more powerful. At their most extreme, they promote science-fiction scenarios of AI “taking over” and causing human extinction. If a technology can replace many employees, surely that technology must be very valuable!

Also, a lot of SaaS software companies charge around $100-$1000 per user/year. But if an AI company can replace an employee who makes $100,000 — or make them 50% more productive — then charging even $10,000 starts to look reasonable. By anchoring not to typical SaaS prices but to salaries of employees, AI companies can charge a lot more.

Additionally, businesses have a strong incentive to talk about layoffs as if they were caused by AI. After all, talking about how they’re using AI to be far more productive with fewer staff makes them look smart. This is a better message than admitting they overhired during the pandemic when capital was abundant due to low interest rates and a massive government financial stimulus.

To be clear, I recognize that AI is causing a lot of people’s work to change. This is hard. This is stressful. (And to some, it can be fun.) I empathize with everyone affected. At the same time, this is very different from predicting a collapse of the job market.

Societies are capable of telling themselves stories for years that have little basis in reality and lead to poor society-wide decision making. For example, fears over nuclear plant safety led to under-investment in nuclear power. Fears of the “population bomb” in the 1960s led countries to implement harsh policies to reduce their populations. And worries about dietary fat led governments to promote unhealthy high-sugar diets for decades.

Now that mainstream media is openly skeptical about the jobpocalypse, I hope these stories will start to lose their teeth (much like fears of AI-driven human extinction have).

Contrary to the predictions of an AI jobpocalypse, I predict the opposite: There will be an AI jobapalooza! AI will lead to a lot more good AI engineering jobs, and I’m also optimistic about the future of the overall job market. What AI engineers do will be different from traditional software engineering, and many of these jobs will be in businesses other than traditional large employers of developers. In non-AI roles, too, the skills needed will change because of AI. That makes this a good time to encourage more people to become proficient in AI, and make sure they’re ready for the different but plentiful jobs of the future!

Zelda BOTW VR Mod Releasing In 2 Days!

5 years ago, Crementif began doing the “impossible”. Trying to port one of the greatest games of all time into full 6DOF VR with motion controls. But being a Wii U game, this was an entirely different kind of challenge.

Through way too many sleepless nights, Crementif stayed with it, and is finally releasing his mod free and open source in 2 days! Here’s just a few of the features:


- Full stereo-rendering with 6DOF (not AER).
- Full VRIK, hands and arms support. You can drip yourself out in all the fanciest clothes.
- Fully and physically wield weapons, torches and bokoblin arms into combat.
- Gestures to equip and throw weapons.
- Use motion controls to interact with the world to solve puzzles or start fires.
- Optional third-person mode.
- Large mod compatibility. BetterVR only modifies the code and no game data. Most other mods should be compatible.

Zelda BOTW has some of the best physics and in VR, a whole new world of what you can do opens up.

Este é o conselho natalino de alguém que viu partir ao longo dos anos toda a família consanguínea imediata:

O ano e a vida inteira a gente escuta aquela ideia abstrata de que o "amor é importante".

A gente toma por garantido, só se lembra quando perdemos alguém e tudo certo! É normal!

O natal, dentre várias razões, é também uma data histórica oportuna de celebrar essa coisa amorfa, difícil de definir, tão martelada.

Pensamos nisso nessa época, mas ao longo dos dias a normalidade arrasta essas percepções e o piloto automático reinicia.

Nem se preocupe. Essa é a condição de ser humano.

E no mais, o amor acontece em nós de forma passiva e é mesmo difícil de definir:

como uma luz branca, ela é a união de todas as cores dos sentimentos nobres.

E até além disso, é a superação dos sentimentos imediatos, impensados, rancorosos e tantos outros que às vezes assumem prioridade na fila de nossas emoções.

É complexo mesmo. O amor se descobre através da retirada de cascas: necessidade, posse, obsessão, perda, assimilação, paixão, falta de amor verdadeiro...

Você remove véus e camadas de achismos até que finalmente veja a diferença abissal entre o amor e todas as outras coisas que você pensou que eram isso.

E para compreende-lo, é preciso compreender: Nunca é fácil. Envolve digerir as falhas do outro como gostaríamos que fizessem conosco, por exemplo.

Ou significa compartilhar o seu sentido da vida com outro ser que o destino trouxe de supetão nessa sua existência.

E é também entender que possui nuances muito únicas e diferentes, como o de mãe para filho e filho para mãe. É muito mais do que apenas uma mudança na ordem das palavras.

O amor verdadeiro não se trata essencialmente da presença um do lado do outro, mas da presença de quem você ama dentro de sua mente e coração.

E é esse que fica diante das separações, sejam quais forem.

Perdas e desenlaces acontecem, mas sempre existirão aqueles capítulos em nossa história que são definidos pelo, já tão repetido neste texto - amor. E o que foi escrito, está eterno.

E pode ser que dure sim até depois do sempre, da mesma forma que pode ter vindo antes do passado.

E se tempo é a verdadeira riqueza terrena, amor é a única riqueza transcendental. Queria que alguém tivesse me convencido disso desde o início, mas sou feliz que consegui perceber isso a tempo na prática.

E não é só transcendental porque atravessa a morte, mas porque atravessa a própria essência humana e todas as suas fraquezas confortáveis.

Ame, então.

E não deixe pra depois. Até para que não se tenha arrependimento, porque tudo será arrebatado. É assim que se aprende nessa escola.

Mas mais do que os nossos amores pessoais, é amor(fo): você pode transformar essa força em vários instrumentos.

Se há discórdia, carregue o seu amor na forma de união

Se há tristeza, exemplifique o seu amor na forma da esperança

Ao rancor, transforme seu amor em um farol de superação e paz

E se no tabuleiro da alma de alguém faltar uma peça, divida as suas com quem precisa se puder. Alimento, tempo, ouvidos, o que for.

Se você observar bem aos sinais, tão abafados diante de todo o ruído, vai ver que essa é uma das razões de estarmos aqui.

Harmonizar, proteger e equilibrar toda essa casa a qual fomos concebidos, bem como todos os seus habitantes.

E por que? Porque o amor cresce e se divide mais fácil apenas onde há paz.
