Storm latest :
Thousands of people are cold and powerless - this morning
We need URGENT action from the Irish Government :Help is at hand if they seek it
The European Commissioner for Crisis Management has confirmed she offered emergency help to
Irish Government last Wednesday (the day before storm) but only received a request for help at 4pm yesterday for the first time :
“Dear Ciaran, thank you for reaching out. My services (DG ECHO Emergency Response Coordination Center - ERCC) have been in contact with the Irish civil protection counterparts since 22 January on this to offer any support needed. We have provided analytical emergency reports to them already on the impact and forecasted damage. We also provided the Copernicus rapid satellite mapping yesterday at Ireland’s request. And just half an hour ago Ireland decided to request the activation of our Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) - specifically for a large mobile generator capacity. The ERCC is already in touch with all EU Member States and UCPM Participating States to quickly mobilize the offers. I can assure you we will continue to work 24/7 to provide the requested assistance to Ireland asap.
For Monday meeting in person it will be difficult as I will need to be in the Foreign Affairs Council. But will ask my cabinet team to keep your office up to speed with the developments and our emergency support. Wish you a lot of courage.
Best, Hadja Lahbib, Commissioner
Footenote: “I find this inexplicable . Irish water needs hundreds of generators to keep reservoirs open while waiting for ESB to deal with unbelievable levels of damage . We desperately need those generators to
maintain water and proper safety standards for half a million homes .”
Delighted to be on the steering committee of ‘Happy Bones’ and driving it forward from a clinical practice perspective. Thank you to its founding members for their wonderful contribution to improving bone healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities
