First it was about destroying Iran’s nuclear program (Trump, Rubio and Vance). Then it was about regime change in Tehran (Trump). Then it was about degrading Iran’s missile capacity (Hegseth and Rubio). Then it was about degrading Iran’s ability to attack its neighbors (Caine). Then it was about preventing an imminent threat from Iran against U.S. troops in the Middle East AFTER Israel struck Iranian targets (Rubio).
Congratulations to the Trump administration for making the George W. Bush administration look competent.
More than 70 years ago, Iran looked like many Western countries, with mini skirts and rock & roll music.
In 1951, Iranians had democratically elected a socialist leader, Mohammad Mossadegh who nationalised Iran’s oil industry, challenging the dominance of the British-owned Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.
Barely two years later, the US and UK orchestrated Operation Ajax that overthrew Mossadegh.
In his place, they installed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, a Shah who ruled as an autocrat. His regime relied on the feared security service SAVAK and widespread political repression. This made Iran an obedient client state of the West.
Iranians hated the Shah and by the late 1970s, all opposition inside Iran coalesced around Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini who had been exiled and who promised independence and justice. In 1979, the Iranian Revolution toppled the Shah.
Soon after, Saddam Hussein invaded Iran, launching the Iran-Iraq War, a conflict that lasted eight years and cost over a million lives. The US supported Iraq with intelligence and chemical weapons.
In 1988, the US shot down Iran Air Flight 655, killing 290 civilians. After the shootdown, members of the crew of the ship that shot down the airliner received service awards for their deployment in the Persian Gulf.
The ship’s captain was awarded the Legion of Merit, while several crew members received Navy Commendation Medals and other standard decorations.
For many Iranians, this became another scar.
Fast forward to now: The US and Israel bomb Iran and the West is quick to “Stand with Israel” and demand “regime change”.
Western officials speak about how Iranians “deserve freedom”, but there’s no mention of the 1953 coup they engineered or the brutal autocrat they propped up for a quarter of a century. They say nothing about Saddam Hussein’s invasion they armed or the 47 years of sanctions and sabotage that has destroyed ordinary people’s lives.
The Americans impoverished the people of Iran and now they point to the suffering as proof the nation must be destroyed.
Israeli forces killed at least 33 Palestinians since dawn on Sunday, including six who were seeking aid, hospital sources in Gaza told Al Jazeera. Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported at least 51 Palestinians killed in the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Israel’s war on Palestinian children continues. 👇🏼
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but using the Bible to justify bombing Iran is no different than extremists using the Koran to justify terror.
Weaponizing religion to excuse violence is dangerous—no matter who’s doing it. Stop the hypocrisy.
It's hard to focus on Israel's airstrikes in Lebanon due to Israel's invasion of Syria, which is hard to focus on due to Israel's atrocities in the West Bank, which are hard to focus on due to Israel's genocide in Gaza, which is hard to focus on due to Israel's war on Iran.
I want everyone to see this because the West has dehumanised so much of our identity across the Middle East for centuries. They’ve been made to believe we come from nothing more than desert tents that flap in the wind. We come from culture. We must humanise our region and people.
BREAKING:
As Netanyahu and Trump escalate threats against Iran, Israel guns down starving Palestinians waiting for food at U.S. aid points in Gaza.
Over 100 killed in less than 24 hours.
Genocide in real time.
Of the many images that I can never unsee and never forget from Gaza, this is one of the most heartbreaking.
Unconditionally supporting the slaughter and suffering of children is not a policy, it’s a crime against humanity.

$40 billion to Ukraine. Good thing US isn't in recession, we no longer have internal white supremacy terror groups, we solved the energy problem, there is no consumer credit issue and global warming is under control.
