STATEMENT ON DRONE INCIDENT NEAR MAKKAH AL-MUKARRAMAH

I view with grave concern reports that a drone was intercepted near Makkah al-Mukarramah. Any attempt to threaten the safety and sanctity of Islam's holiest city would be wholly unacceptable.

Malaysia expresses its deep appreciation for the swift action taken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to protect residents and pilgrims in Makkah.

This incident underscores the urgent need to prevent further escalation in the region. Malaysia calls for an immediate end to attacks on civilian sites and to any action that could endanger holy sites. We urge the relevant parties to exercise restraint and pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue without delay.

BREAKING | Saudi-led Arab Coalition: Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone before it entered the restricted airspace over the holy city of Mecca.

The coalition said the incident marks a second attempt to target Mecca, following a ballistic missile launch toward the city on July 27, 2017, stressing that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims is a “red line.”

It added that the Joint Forces Command will take the necessary deterrent measures against what it described as Houthi “aggressive and terrorist” conduct.

The US is preparing a $2.8 billion arms package for Israel, including tens of thousands of 2,000-pound (900kg) bombs and penetrator warheads, The Washington Post reports.

The proposed deal includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs, 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, and 20,000 I-2000 penetrator warheads.

MK-84 bombs have been widely used by Israel in Palestine’s Gaza and Lebanon, where their use has drawn scrutiny over civilian casualties, including in areas designated as safe for Palestinians.

The package would exceed previous US transfers of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel under both the Biden and Trump administrations.
