Sold at auction for barely €50 after label damage meant nobody recognised it. Turned out to be the last-known bottle of Romanée-Conti 1899.
Ned Goodwin MW on the extraordinary lunch where it was finally opened. 🍷

@MattChristmas1 That is so cheap even then! The inflation calculator says to double the price for today's money! I remember paying £25 for a 3 course meal in Oxford in 1989 (a week's rent in 1986 was also £25)...
@FoodChatMatt@Top50Gastropubs No1 is fabulous - been there a couple of times. Never heard of the Surrey ones, but I'm always pretty impressed by the Running Horses in Mickleham.
Only two Surrey pubs in this year's @Top50Gastropubs list, and both in the bonus 50 rather than the main selection. Who do you think should have been in with a shout? 🤔

@FoodChatMatt Easy! The Royal Oak, Fritham. Tiny pub but lots of outside space, no pumps - barrels lined up behind the bar, very simple (but perfect) local food, proper fire, very friendly. https://t.co/7GlpfaHYoW
Do you have a view about having a plastic, fenced off, football pitch in Ashtead Rec? As the Council won't send a letter to every household, or commit to a binding referendum, we're distributing our own leaflet to alert residents & asking all to use the Council website survey.
