लोगों के लिए सोनिया गांधी @SoniaGandhi क्या हैं? मुझे नहीं पता। मेरे लिए आजाद भारत के इतिहास में वो इकलौती स्त्री हैं जिन्होंने तीन तीन बार पीएम के पद को ठोकर मारी।

मुझे बार बार प्रख्यात पत्रकार और संपादक स्वर्गीय प्रभाष जोशी की कही वो बात याद आती है। जिसमें उन्होंने महात्मा गांधी की तुलना सोनिया गांधी से की थी।

"सोनिया गांधी के प्रधानमंत्री पद नामंजूर करने और मनमोहन सिंह को देश का सर्वोच्च कार्यकारी पद दिलवाने की अगर कोई मिसाल आपको ढूंढनी हो तो सिर्फ दो उदाहरण मिलेंगे ।

ऐसा अपने यहां पहले सिर्फ दो व्यक्तियों ने किया है। मोहनदास करमचंद गांधी ने अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ कोई बत्तीस साल आजादी की लड़ाई की अगुवाई की और आजाद भारत की सत्ता जवाहर लाल नेहरू को सौंप दी । दूसरे जयप्रकाश नारायण ने इंदिरा गांधी की तानाशाही कृतियों के विरुद्ध संघर्ष किया, लेकिन पहली गैरकांग्रेसी केन्द्रीय सरकार की बागडोर मोरारजी देसाई के हाथों में दे दी ।

इससे अगर आपको लगे कि मैं सोनिया गांधी की तुलना गांधी और जेपी से कर रहा हूं और किसी छुटभैये कांग्रेसी चम्मच जैसी बात कह गया हूं तो क्षमा कर दीजिए। लेकिन बताइए कि त्याग और बलिदान को सबसे बड़े मूल्य मानने वाले देश में कितने तपस्वी विदेह राजनेता हुए हैं जिनने प्रधानमंत्री पद छोड़ा हो?"

गांधी और जेपी दोनों ही सत्ता के आदमी नहीं थे, हालांकि उन्होंने इस देश में दो सबसे बड़े राजनैतिक परिवर्तनों की अगुवाई की। वे दोनों चुनाव नहीं लड़े थे। वे दोनों ही राजसत्ता से क्रांतिकारी समाज परिवर्तन में विश्वास नहीं करते थे ।

लेकिन एक अद्भुत चुनाव में सोनिया गांधी न सिर्फ अपनी पार्टी और गठबंधन को भाजपा गठबंधन से आगे निकाल ले गई, कोई सवा तीन सौ सांसदों ने उन्हें प्रधानमंत्री बनाने का निर्णय लिया। उन्हें राष्ट्रपति ने अपना दावा बताने के लिए बुलाया भी और वे उनसे मिलकर भी आई।

सोनिया गांधी को प्रधानमंत्री बनने से कोई रोक नहीं सकता था। वे छह साल से चाहे अनचाहे सत्ता राजनीति में थीं जिसमें प्रधानमंत्री होने से बड़ा कुछ नहीं होता। लेकिन उन्होंने प्रधानमंत्री का पद अस्वीकार कर दिया।"
