Mumbai Police have begun issuing WhatsApp notices to nearly 300 participants, many of them students, directing them to appear before investigating officers after fresh FIRs were registered over the recent NEET protests. The notices, sent under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), require accused in offences punishable with less than seven years' imprisonment to cooperate with the investigation instead of being arrested.

The action comes a day after seven new FIRs were registered, taking the total number of cases linked to the Mumbai NEET protests to 12. According to police, more than 900 people have been named or booked, including hundreds of unidentified protesters. The FIRs relate to alleged unlawful assembly and disobedience of lawful orders, which are bailable offences carrying a maximum punishment of two years.

Police said the cases registered across multiple police stations will be transferred to Shivaji Park Police Station for investigation. Officials maintained that action was taken because the protests were allegedly held without permission, while organisers have alleged that several activists and youth leaders were detained even before the demonstrations began.
