D.: Heaven and hell - what are they?
M.: You carry heaven and hell with you. Your lust, anger, etc. produce these regions. They are like dreams.
There must be someone to go there. They are like dreams. We see time and space exist in dream also. Which is true, dream or wakefulness?
D.: So we must rid ourselves of lust (kama), anger (krodha), etc.
M.: Give up thoughts. You need not give up anything else. You must be there to see anything. It is the Self. Self is ever-conscious.

HOW MANTRAS WORK ?
“Everything in the universe vibrates on specific wavelengths". These wave-lengths can be manipulated. For example, when its pitch is created high enough, A violin note can shatter glass. The various mantras, although equally efficient, vibrate on different wavelengths.”
In theory, by repeating a mantra over and over, an individual is able to reattune his resonance (or entrain with the energy of the mantra), so that, ultimately, The use of the mantra causes one to resonate with the particular deity or force with which the mantra is aligned. It is as though mantras are sonic formulas. Just as chemical formulas can create particular elements through the addition of different sub-stances, a mantra can create a specific waveform or sonic energy. By resonating with a deity or force, one takes on the qualities of that deity or force. Thus the use of mantras can bring about union with a god, enlightenment, or perhaps attainment of great powers and abilities (siddhis).
The mind will not be killed by the mind. You must find its source, then it will vanish. It is like a thief acting as a policeman to catch himself. He will go with you, but he will never catch himself. So you must turn within and see from where the mind arises; then it disappears.

Q : What is the mark of the ego?
A : The individual soul of the form of 'I' is the ego. The Self which is of the nature of intelligence ('chit') has no sense of 'I'. Nor does the insentient body possess a sense of 'I'. The mysterious appearance of a delusive ego between the intelligent and the insentient being the root cause of all these troubles, upon its destruction by whatever means, that which really exists will be seen as it is. This is called liberation ('moksha').

Can you help me to get rid of Maya?
M: What is Maya?
Q: Attachment to the world.
M: Was the world present in your sleep? Was there attachment to it?
Q: No, there was not.
M: Were you there or not?
Q: Yes, I was.
M: You are therefore the same one who was in sleep.
Q: Yes.
M: What is it then that now raises the question of Maya?
Q: There was no mind in sleep, so the world only exists for the mind.
M: Yes. The pure Self is simple being. It does not associate itself with objects and becomes conscious as it does in the waking state. What you now call consciousness in the present state is associated consciousness, depending upon the brain, the mind, and the body etc. But in sleep, that consciousness persisted without these.

Q: How can I remove ignorance?
M: While lying asleep in Tiruvannamalai, you dream of finding yourself in another town. Can another town enter your room? Or could you have left home and gone elsewhere?
No, both are impossible. Both are unreal, but they appear real to the mind. On waking, the ‘I’ of the dream vanishes, and another 'I' speaks of the dream. Both are unreal; it is the substratum of the mind that continues all along that gives rise to so many scenes.
Many I's are born and die every moment. The subsisting mind is the real trouble. Find that, and you will be happy.

The body is a complex structure containing a large number of instruments or organs which the Self, as ego, uses for a large number of purposes, including among others those of hearing, smelling, seeing, thinking, feeling, memorizing and reasoning. The materials out of which these instruments or parts are made vary from the grossest to the finest. The 'Shastras' have arranged them in five groups. To each group one sheath or kosha is assigned. The kosha dealing with purely physical matter is called "annamayakosha" (the sheath of food). The "pranamayakosha" (the vital sheath) looks after the fivefold functions of the vital energies - breathing, assimilation, generation, excretion and locomotion. The "manomayakosha (mental sheath) contains the faculties of mentation. The "vijnānamayakosha" is the sheath of the intellectual and reasoning faculties, of scientific and philosophical thinking, and last is the "anandamayakosha", the sheath of bliss, or casual sheath, which stores up within itself the karmic seeds of every birth and is concerned with that state in which profound peace is enjoyed by the dreamless sleeper. This kosha is made of the finest substance, sattva, which in itself is happy, due to its freedom from grossness and to its close proximity to the blissful Self.
Thus the term body includes all these koshas, whose appearance and disappearance cause the appearance and disappearance of all objective and subjective perceptions. Assumption of a body is therefore necessary for the world's enjoyment and the body owes its existence, to the five senses, which are the properties of the mind.

It is good if suffering comes to devotees. The dhobi [washerman], when washing clothes, beats them hard against a rock. But he does so only to remove the dirt from the clothes.
Similarly, all sufferings are given for the sole purpose of purifying the mind of the devotee. If we are patient, happiness will follow.

Sri Bhagavan
Disciple: As far as I can see it, it is impossible to realize the Self until one has completely succeeded in preventing the rushing thoughts. Am I right?
Bhagavan: Not exactly. You do not need to prevent other thoughts. In deep sleep, you are entirely free from thoughts, because the ‘I’-thought is absent. The moment the ‘I’-thought rises on waking, all other thoughts rush out spontaneously.
The wisest thing for one to do is, therefore, to catch hold of this leading thought, the ‘I’-thought, and dissect it – who and what it is – giving thereby no chance to other thoughts to distract one. There lies the true value of the vichara and its efficacy in mind control.

A woman wanted to renounce the world after the death of her son.
Maharshi: Recall the state of sleep. Were you aware of anything happening? If the son or the world were real, wouldn't they be present with you in sleep?
You cannot deny your existence in sleep, nor can you deny that you were happy there. Yet you are the same person now speaking and raising doubts. You say you are not happy. But you were happy in sleep. What has transpired in the meantime that the happiness of sleep has broken down?
It is the ego. And that arises with the waking state. There was no ego in sleep. The birth of the ego is called the birth of the person. There is no other birth.
Whatever is born is bound to die.
There is no fear of death for that which is already dead.
The Self remains after the death of the ego.
That is Bliss - that is immortality.

Visitor: How to prevent falling asleep in meditation?
Bhagavan: If you try to prevent sleep, it will mean thinking in meditation, which must be avoided. But if you slip into sleep while meditating, the meditation will continue even during and after sleep.
Yet, being a thought, sleep must be gotten rid of, for the native state has to be attained consciously in jagrat (the waking state) without the disturbing thoughts. Waking and sleeping are mere pictures on the screen of the native, thought-free state. Let them pass unnoticed.

WHAT IS SAMADHI ?
Bhagavan spent a lot of time this afternoon freely conversing with devotees about many matters, and in between teaching them Advaita. Seeing that the conversation was going on without end, a new arrival got up and asked, “Bhagavan, when do you go into samadhi?” All the devotees burst into laughter. Bhagavan also laughed.
After a while, he said, “Oh, is that your doubt? I will clear it, but first tell me what exactly is the meaning of samadhi? Where should we go? To a hill or to a cave? Or to the sky? What should samadhi be like? Tell me,” asked Bhagavan. Poor man, he could not say anything and sat down quietly. After a while, he said, “Unless the movement of the indriyas and limbs stops, there cannot be samadhi, they say. When do you go into that samadhi?” “I see, that is what you want to know. You think, ‘What is this? This Swami is always speaking. What Jnani is he?’ That is your idea? It is not samadhi unless one sits cross-legged in padmasana, with folded hands and stops breathing. There must also be a cave near about. One must go in and out of it. Then people will say, ‘This is a great Swami’. As for me, they begin doubting and say, ‘What Swami is this who is always talking to his devotees and has his daily routine?’ What can I do? This happened once or twice even before. People who had originally seen me at Gurumurtham and then saw me at Skandasramam, talking to all people and partaking in normal activities, said to me with great anxiety, ‘Swami, Swami, please give us darshan in your previous state.’ Their impression was that I was getting spoiled. What can I do? At that time (while in Gurumurtham) I had to live like that. Now I am obliged to live like this. Things happen the way they have to. But in their view, it is enough if one does not eat or talk. Then saintliness, swamitvam, comes on automatically. That is the delusion people have,” said Bhagavan.

Letters from Sri Ramanasramam
@davidfrawleyved@DeviRudrani@TruthAlone2@SrimanNarayena@Rao5BA
One day, while going up the Hill, Bhagavan referred to the misunderstanding between two prominent devotees and wanted me to convey to them the following message: “Whoever condemns us is our friend. For he condemns only our body, which is our enemy. The enemy’s enemy is the best friend. We should really beware of those who praise us.” The next morning I met the two devotees to convey Bhagavan’s message. Even before I opened my mouth, they both expressed their eagerness to make up their quarrel. One morning at breakfast, Bhagavan asked me, “Do you know this chutney?” I replied, “No. It tastes excellent though.” He smiled and said, “It is bitter-gourd.” It could hardly be believed but for Bhagavan saying it, because it had no trace of bitterness. On the other hand, it was very palatable. Then I composed a Telugu verse expressing wonder how Bhagavan could remove bitterness so completely from raw bitter-gourd, and praying that He might likewise wipe out the bitterness of ego from within us. As soon as he returned from his usual walk on the Hill, I showed him the piece. He explained that sour mango and coconut were mixed to counteract and suppress the bitter taste in the chutney, and added, “Bitter-gourd is good for digestion and it also acts as a laxative.” In the evening Bhagavan referred to the description of the Self as “the smallest of atoms, the biggest of big things.” He said, “The hailstone falls in the ocean. At once it melts and becomes the ocean itself. Likewise, the source of the Self is a pinpoint. When it is searched for, it disappears, and only the fullness remains.”

Mere Being Alone is NATURAL:
M.: He who instructs an ardent seeker to do this or that is not a true master. The seeker is already afflicted by his activities and wants Peace and Rest.
In other words, he wants cessation of his activities. Instead of that, he is told to do something in addition to, or in place of, his other activities. Can that be a help to the seeker?
Activity is creation; activity is the destruction of one’s inherent happiness. If activity be advocated the adviser is not a master but the killer. Either the Creator (Brahma) or Death (Yama) may be said to have come in the guise of such a master. He cannot liberate the aspirant but strengthens his fetters.
D.: When we attempt to cease from activity the very attempt is action. So activity seems to be inevitable.
M.: True. Thayumanavar has also alluded to it. A doctor advises a patient to take the prescribed medicine with only one condition. That condition is not to think of a monkey when he takes the medicine. Can the patient ever take the medicine? Will he not think of the monkey whenever he tries not to do so?
So also, when people try to give up thoughts their object is frustrated by their very attempt.
D.: How then is the state to be attained?
M.: What is there to attain? A thing remains to be attained if it is not already attained. But here one’s very being is That.
Someone: Why do we not then know it?
Annamalai Swami: I should always try to think I am That.
M.: Why should one think “I am That”? He is That only. Does a man go on thinking that he is a man?
Mr. Anantachari: The belief ‘I am a man’ is so deep that we cannot help thinking so.
M.: Why should you think “I am a man”? If you are challenged you may say ‘I am a man’. Therefore, the thought - ‘I am a man’ - is called up when another thought, say ‘I am an animal’, protrudes itself.
Similarly, the thought I am That is necessary only so long as the other thought I am a man persists.
D.: The thought ‘I am a man’ is so firm that it cannot he got rid of.
M.: Be your true Self. Why should you think ‘I am a man’?
D.: The thought ‘I am a man’ is so natural.
M.: Not so. On the other hand, ‘I am’ is natural. Why do you qualify it with ‘a man’?
D.: ‘I am a man’ is so obvious whereas ‘I am That’ is not understood by us.
M.: You are neither That nor This. The truth is ‘I am’. “I AM that I AM” according to the Bible also. Mere Being is alone natural. To limit it to ‘being a man’ is uncalled for.
D.: (Humorously) If votes be taken the majority will be on my side. (Laughter)
M.: I cast my vote also on your side (Laughter). I say also ‘I am a man’: but I am not limited to the body. It is IN ME. That is the difference.
Someone: The limitation (upadhi) of being a man cannot be got rid of.
M.: How were you in deep sleep? There was no thought of being a man.
Another: So, the state of sleep must be brought about even when one is awake.
M.: Yes. It is jagrat-sushupti.
Sri Bhagavan continued: Some people even say that while they sleep, they are enclosed somewhere in the body. They forget that such an idea did not persist in sleep but rises up only on waking. They bring their waking-state to bear upon their sleep.
The lights went down, and all retired.

The Power of the Presence
@davidfrawleyved@TruthAlone2@Santosh64355195@drsarojsalelkar@yaSubramanya1
A visitor is experiencing great difficulty in meditation when he fights with what he imagines to be his ego. He went to the Master for verification.
Visitor: In my meditation, I try to eliminate the wrong ‘I’, but so far without success.
Bhagavan: How can ‘I’ eliminate itself? All you have to do is to find its source and abide in it as your real Self. Your efforts can extend thus far, the Beyond will take care of itself.
Visitor: Bhagavan, you always say that the Self is ever-present: if I am present then why do I not feel it?
Bhagavan: Do you not now feel that you exist? Your doubt is whether you will ever continue to exist. Why should you have any doubt? A little thinking will convince you that the destructible part of your being, the body, is a mere machine, a tool in the service of the indestructible, the mind, which is the all-in-all, the knower and the master – you yourself.
Your doubts and difficulties arise from your thoughts, which perceive the body and mistake it for yourself. Stop the thoughts, which are your enemy (the ego), and the mind will remain as your pure being, the immortal ‘I’. That is the best way of eliminating the ego.
