We are not gasifying coal to generate electricity. Burning coal for electricity is cheap; gasifying coal to produce power is economically unviable.

This whole scheme is designed to turn coal into Syngas: a mixture of CO + H2 . The foundational building block for urea, ammonia, methanol & synthetic natural gas (SNG). Right now, we spend ~₹3 lakh cr annually importing these critical industrial chemicals & natural gas.

If global geopolitical supply chains snap, our agricultural sector which depends heavily on imported urea & fertilizer collapses. The govt is using its 5th largest global coal reserve to insulate its agricultural & chemical supply chains from foreign shocks.
