@EtihadHelp@etihad Dear Etihad Customer Relations,
I appreciate and understand Etihad Airways is under immense pressure given the situation, but it still doesn't warrant the experience I received. The Etihad flight flew but my confirmed Business Class ticket was cancelled. I am writing to lodge a formal complaint regarding the handling of my booking, reference 97K8SO, for travel from Mumbai to Zurich via Abu Dhabi on 8th March 2026.
My original itinerary was:
EY207 Mumbai (BOM) to Abu Dhabi (AUH) Departure: 04:40, 8 March 2026 Arrival: 06:25, 8 March 2026
EY139 Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Zurich (ZRH) Departure: 08:40, 8 March 2026 Arrival: 12:50, 8 March 2026
On 7th March 2026, I was informed that my Abu Dhabi to Zurich sector had been updated from EY139 to EY141, with the revised timing showing:
EY141 Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Zurich (ZRH) Departure: 14:40, 8 March 2026 Arrival: 19:50, 8 March 2026
My Mumbai to Abu Dhabi flight EY207 remained unchanged and was still scheduled to depart at 04:40 AM on 8th March 2026.
Based on that information, I proceeded to the airport as planned and arrived at the Mumbai Airport at 01:30 AMon 8th March 2026 for the 4.40 AM flight.
Listing below are the events that happened at Mumbai Airport:
1The lady at the check-in counter informed me that the flight EY141 from Abu Dhabi to Zurich was not allowing her to check-in as they were confirming whether the flight would fly out of Abu Dhabi to Zurich.
2Then I showed her the Etihad website and the FlightRadar24 App, and it was showing that the flight is as per schedule.
3After some time, she informed me that the flight EY141 from Abu Dhabi to Zurich was cancelled.
4Again, I showed her the Etihad website and FlightRadar24 App confirming that the flight is flying.
5After some time, she informed me that my flight ticket for EY207 from Mumbai to Abu Dhabi and for EY141 from Abu Dhabi to Zurich has been cancelled and that my entire reservation has been cancelled.
6The check-in lady asked me to approach the Manager, Mr. Ashish, (I recall that’s the name) whom I found with great difficulty at one of the check-in counters. He was most unhelpful and he was lying. He gave me an Etihad call centre no (which as expected just kept on ringing) and he directed me to go to the Service counter where he was not present while he should have been there. While he being the Manager, he should be having the direct line connection with Etihad.
7I requested the lady at the Service counter that since I have an urgent Medical Appointment, I was willing to travel Economy Class also, but the lady was busy handling guests whose flights were hours later while my flight from Mumbai was departing in an hour’s time. She simply put her hands upand refused to accommodate me on any other flight and asked me to keep on calling the Etihad Call Centre while I am sure that she too would have a direct line connection with Etihad.
8I then rushed to the Emirates counter who were very helpful and issued me the Emirates Business Class Tickets for flight EK505 from Mumbai to Dubai and EK085 from Dubai to Zurich for 8th March 2026. They also checked me in and issued the Boarding Passes for both the sectors.
I want to be very clear about the seriousness of this situation:
1. It is very clear that either Etihad had sold my ticket at a higher price or it had overbooked the Business Class which is quite unheard of or for whatever other reason tried to accommodate some other passenger or some passenger who was stranded in Abu Dhabi.
2. I did not cancel this reservation.
3. I did not receive any prior email informing me that my full booking had been cancelled. On the contrary I received an email stating that my flight is flying and on time.
@etihad@EtihadHelp 4. I only received an email from Etihad later, at 04:00 AM on 8th March 2026, for a flight which was going to take off at 4.40 AM stating - “We apologise, but due to ongoing regional restrictions, we are unable to accommodate you on your upcoming flight. We understand the frustration and inconvenience this has caused. As we couldn’t find a suitable alternative, we will automatically process your refund. Thank you for your continued patience during this time.”
This handling was completely unacceptable. I was left stranded at the airport with no meaningful advance notice, no proper re-accommodation, and no practical solution despite holding a business class booking and despite the urgency of my travel. I had critical medical appointments in Zurich on 9 and 10 March 2026, and due to Etihad’s actions I was forced to make last-minute alternative travel arrangements at enormous expense.
As a direct result of Etihad’s cancellation of my reservation, I incurred the following losses:
1. The cost of replacement flights on another airline of approximately INR 12,00,000 (approximately USD 13,000)
2. The loss of the original Etihad ticket value of approximately INR 3,00,000
3. Fees charged in connection with changes to my medical appointments in Switzerland
4. Hotel costs in Switzerland connected to the missed reservation and disruption
What makes this even more difficult to understand is that, to the best of my understanding, (EY207 Mumbai to Abu Dhabi and EY141 Abu Dhabi to Zurich) operated on 8 March 2026, and these flights also operated on 9 March 2026. If that is correct, Etihad had no basis to cancel my reservation outright without either transporting me or offering a suitable alternative. At a minimum, I should have been given the opportunity to rebook or be re-accommodated.
I therefore request the following:
1. A full refund of my original Etihad booking
2. Reimbursement of the replacement flight costsI was forced to incur due to Etihad’s cancellation of my reservation
3. Reimbursement of the medical rescheduling fees
4. Reimbursement of the hotel costs and other directly related disruption expenses
5. A written explanation of:
o why my full reservation was cancelled,
o when exactly that cancellation was made,
o why I was not informed in time,
o and why no suitable re-accommodation was provided
I ask that this matter be escalated urgently and that I receive a substantive written response within 7 days. I am prepared to provide all supporting documentation, including booking confirmations, the Etihad notification email, receipts for the replacement flights, hotel charges, and medical rescheduling costs.
I hope Etihad will resolve this promptly and fairly. Failing that, I will have to consider pursuing the matter further through all available legal and regulatory channels.
