Maldives extends relief support to Sri Lanka 🇲🇻 🤝 🇱🇰

The Government of Maldives has decided to extend relief assistance to Sri Lanka through financial support of USD 50,000 and a donation of 25,000 cases of tuna cans. 
The Government of Maldives took this decision to extend humanitarian and relief assistance on behalf of the Maldivian people to the people of Sri Lanka, in response to the widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
This gesture is a demonstration of solidarity with our close neighbour and the friendly people of Sri Lanka. The Maldives hopes that this modest donation will contribute towards the efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka, to assist those affected - reflecting the deep commitment to the close bonds shared between the two nations and their peoples.

Under the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act of 2013, any peaceful assembly planned outside designated areas requires approval from the Maldives Police Service for the chosen location. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) submitted a request for a specific route for their event. However, due to heavy traffic on Majeedhee Magu and to prioritize the safety and security of participants, the police approved an alternative route and were fully prepared to cooperate with the event’s organizers. Despite this, the MDP disregarded both their requested route and the approved alternative, suggesting that their intent may not have been to hold a peaceful event. The government remains committed to upholding the right to freedom of expression within the legal framework, ensuring the safety and rights of all individuals are protected.

The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill unifies oversight under an independent commission, with majority members chosen directly by registered media entities themselves, ensuring transparency and independence from executive control. It modernizes registration, sets clear professional standards, and strengthens public confidence in the press.

Previous Government's record on media freedom is not the success story they claim. Journalists covering protests were met with pepper spray, shields, and force even while displaying press IDs. Others were dragged into custody or placed under curfew conditions simply for doing their jobs. That is not the hallmark of a free press.
