When the world was slamming doors on Jews, India opened them. A maharaja in Nawanagar told Polish orphans, many of them Jewish children fleeing hell: you are no longer orphans. You are ours. An industrialist from Ludhiana forged jobs and visas in Nazi Vienna so Jewish families could live. Thousands of German-speaking Jews found shelter on Indian soil when “civilized” Europe was hunting them. India did not do it for cameras. It did it because that is who we are.

What Captain Smit Machchhar did today was not a miracle. It was India 🇮🇳.

Stabbed in the cockpit of a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv. Plane plunging. Co-pilot trying to turn 180 lives into another 9/11. And an ordinary Indian captain from Gujarat fought, bled, unlocked the door, and refused to let the aircraft die. Most of those passengers were Israelis. An Indian kept them alive.
This is not new.

Look at the record after that. Earthquake. Tsunami. Cyclone. War. Famine of water. India is often the first wheels on the ground, Nepal, Maldives, Türkiye, Syria, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, even Venezuela, while the same world lectures us, mocks our accents, our gods, our food, our skin, our success. We arrive anyway. We build. We treat. We fly home quietly.

Every day, millions of Indians thousands of miles from home are doing this: flying the plane, running the ward, fixing the grid, coding the system, mopping the floor no one else will mop. Not the most polished. Not always the most sophisticated. But they show up. They hold the line. They do not ask the passenger’s passport before they bleed for them.
And still they are targeted. Still they are the punchline. Still they are told they do not belong in the very countries they keep standing.

Remember the name: Captain Smit Machchhar. Pray for his recovery. Then remember the larger truth, this was not an exception. This is the pattern. India does not wait to be loved before it saves you.

Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian captain of flydubai Flight 1073, fought back after being stabbed in the cockpit.

Despite being severely injured, he managed to unlock the cockpit door - allowing Israeli passengers and the Emirati crew to intervene and save all the passengers.

Together, their extraordinary courage saved 174 lives.

Indian. Israeli. Emirati.
