I’m back in the Occupied West Bank, reporting live from the ground. Follow along here, on substack (link in bio), and IG (same handle). Lot of shit going down.
This bill would require companies break off their AI-related businesses from non-AI related businesses. It also would likely cover Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Nvidia, Micron, Waymo, Broadcom, and a host of chip firms.

Extraordinary reporting by @SkyNews in southern Iran, meeting with mothers whose children were killed by a US strike on a school in Minab.
‘It is completely overwhelming for all of us here. You have child after child, grave after grave, of dead children. Every evening…their families come after dusk to spend hours at their children’s graveside, mourning their loss..”

Me: “Are you worried about the FISA backdoor search loophole given the government used it to spy on Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020?”
Jim Clyburn (D-SC): “I don’t worry about stuff. I just live through it.”

Today I released an investigative piece on something most people don't think about until they really need it - ambulances. The price of ambulances has skyrocketed since 2012. Why? It's likely... private equity.

(🧵1/11) For the past year and a half, I've been investigating OpenAI and Sam Altman for @NewYorker. With my coauthor @andrewmarantz, I reviewed never-before-disclosed internal memos, obtained 200+ pages of documents related to a close colleague, including extensive private notes, and interviewed more than 100 people.
OpenAI was founded on the premise that A.I. could be the most dangerous invention in human history—and that its C.E.O. would need to be a person of uncommon integrity. We lay out the most detailed account yet of why Altman was ousted out by board members and executives who came to believe he lacked that integrity, and ask: were they right to allege that he couldn't be trusted?
A thread on some of of our findings:

The IDF took what appears to be unprecedented action against the battalion involved in my team's assault & detention.
In many ways, that's due to our position as US journalists. In too many cases involving Palestinian journalists & civilians, we've seen a lack of accountability.
While covering the latest Israeli settler attack in the West Bank, Israeli soldiers assaulted my photojournalist @cyrilthps and detained my team.
But our 2-hour detention revealed a lot about the motives of these Israeli soldiers: acting in service of the settler movement.

There are millions or even billions of people in this world who fundamentally do not understand that children everywhere are the same. This precious child, the tens of thousands dead in Gaza—people don’t connect them to the idea of their own child being violently killed.
