Heat has always been one of engineering’s biggest headaches.
You generate it almost everywhere. You can’t steer it. It just spreads - randomly, evenly - into whatever sits around it.
That changed on July 23, 2026.
Researchers at UCLA showed that inside boron arsenide, a crystalline semiconductor, heat doesn’t have to behave that way. It can travel in tight, focused beams, steered by the crystal’s atomic structure itself.
The effect is called phonon focusing. Phonons are the tiny quantum vibrations that actually carry heat through solids. In most crystals at room temperature they bounce around constantly, so heat simply diffuses outward in every direction at once. In boron arsenide the geometry of the lattice forces those phonons into preferred pathways. Instead of spreading in a neat circle, the heat shoots along specific crystal planes, almost like light guided down an optical fibre.
The team confirmed it with nanoscale temperature maps. Ordinary materials produced the familiar circular hot spot. Boron arsenide produced sharp, ray-like patterns that lined up exactly with the crystal’s orientation. Depending on which plane they looked at, they saw six-fold, eight-fold, or four-fold focusing patterns, each one predictable, each one selectable just by choosing how the crystal is oriented.
That’s why chip designers are paying attention. Overheating is still the main thing holding processors back. More transistors mean more heat, which means you have to throttle the clock speeds. If you can route that heat away from the sensitive spots along deliberate paths instead of letting it smear everywhere, chips can run faster, denser, and cooler.

Peu à peu, les meilleurs industriels, ingénieurs et inventeurs disparaissent.
Derrière ces disparitions se trouve John Galt. Il a compris que le système ne tient que parce que ceux qu’il exploite continuent malgré tout à le faire fonctionner.
Il organise donc une grève particulière : non pas celle des ouvriers, mais celle de l’intelligence, de la compétence et de la responsabilité.
Les producteurs ne sabotent rien. Ils cessent simplement de réparer, d’inventer et de porter un monde qui les condamne tout en dépendant entièrement d’eux.
Le titre original, « Atlas Shrugged », résume le livre.
Atlas porte le monde sur ses épaules.
Ayn Rand pose une question : que se passe-t-il si Atlas décide de hausser les épaules et de laisser tomber le monde ?
Le pouvoir finit par vouloir tout figer : les entreprises ne peuvent plus fermer, les salariés ne peuvent plus partir, les prix sont bloqués, les brevets saisis.
Mais on peut saisir une usine sans savoir la faire fonctionner.
On peut confisquer une invention sans être capable d’en créer une nouvelle.
On peut imposer l’obéissance. On ne peut pas imposer l’intelligence.
C’est ce que raconte "La Grève".
Une société peut longtemps mépriser ceux qui la font fonctionner.
Mais elle ne peut pas survivre lorsqu’ils décident de ne plus la porter.

These are not interchangeable complaints. They are complementary sacrifices. One sex carries the primary cost of creating new life. The other sex carries the primary cost of protecting that life and extracting the resources necessary to sustain it from a dangerous and indifferent world.
To reduce the entire male side of this ancient division of labour to “what do men deal with?” as if the answer were “nothing of consequence” is not compassion. It is a deliberate refusal to look at the hierarchical and sacrificial structure of reality itself.
The proper response is not grievance. It is gratitude for the complementary burdens that have kept the species alive, and the individual responsibility to carry one’s own share of them without self-pity.
