Since assisted dying was last debated by MPs there has been a march of progressive legislation around the world. 25 jurisdictions, including in the USA, Australia and New Zealand have legalised assisted dying.

This signals:

1) A tidal shift in global opinion as citizens demand a choice over how and when they die and

2) More and more evidence, with each jurisdiction that legislates showing how a new law works safely and compassionately in countries not so different to our own.

I feel so sad for the whole Mansfield family. This is such a terrible story, and one that could have been avoided under a safeguarded assisted dying law. We need a review of the current position so that parliamentarians can make informed decisions about the shape of a future law.
