Artemis III will push the boundaries of spacecraft operations in orbit. @ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano’s assignment as pilot reflects the depth of European expertise in human spaceflight and draws on his extensive operational experience in high-pressure situations. At the same time, ESA’s European Service Module (ESM) will once again provide the critical capabilities that power Orion, demonstrating Europe’s enduring role at the very heart of the Artemis programme.
The news out of Houston today is a powerful recognition of ESA’s role in enabling humankind’s return to the Moon – and a key advancement in our partnership with @NASA. Europeans can take pride in being part of this exciting journey. #ArtemisIII @astro_luca
“[My] launchpad is my country, Italy…The European Space Agency is like a launch tower… the rocket, literally and figuratively, is NASA.”
@ESA astronaut and Artemis III pilot @Astro_Luca shares words of gratitude.
Our astronaut Luca Parmitano is assigned as pilot of NASA’s #ArtemisIII mission.
With Europe powering Orion with the European Service Module, this mission will test the critical operations preparing for humankind's return to the Moon.
A strong step forward for ESA–NASA partnership.

Day 103, orbit 1598 — From orbit, volcanoes are some of the most beautiful natural sights… Etna caught me by surprise one morning as I opened the shutters. The whiteness of its slopes… and that elegant plume of smoke which is a gentle reminder that it’s only lightly, very lightly, asleep. I just had time to take a quick photo, but I kept an eye out for it the next day to capture a few more! A special thought for my fellow ESA astronaut @astro_luca Parmitano, who is from Catania, at the foot of Etna.
Less than a minute later, and we’re flying over Vesuvius, instantly recognisable by the vast crater, the path winding up to the summit, and, most of all, Naples spread out all around it.

@sharonbrunton Merry Christmas! Thank you for your words, I know I’m not a talented photographer in any way - many colleagues have taken far better pictures - so I’m grateful you liked mine.
🇮🇹🇺🇸Great visit at @NASA_Johnson
.Italy-US space cooperation is strategic
.Industrial partnerships and investments are strong
.Collaboration with @NASA is key
.Proud of the important role of our astronauts, researchers, and space firms
Grazie @astro_luca for your hospitality!
Ok, who is in for a wild flight with @united? 🙋🏽♂️ well, buckle up and sit back, we’re going for the long haul. So, I’m flying from Houston to Munich, and because I know my airlines I went for a very long (6hr) stopover, then on to my final destination. I thought there was no way I’d miss my connection, right? (Spoiler: I was wrong). 1/
@united 4/ so if we end up in Reykjavik, it’s probably not going to be a surprise! I just wish I could share the experience with my daughters, but @united put us in separate rows. And the adventure is not over: there’s a great chance we might miss the connection!
@united 2/Because, of course, how could one predict that you need food? They must have been surprised! 😇 But all is well that ends well. Except… we’re still at the gate, 1h20’ past our planned take off time. So I polled the passengers:
@united 1/ UPDATES: This is the gift that keeps on giving! So, we got to the hotel around 2am - 3 adults, one room, 2 beds: thanks for the effort, @united! After spending the entire afternoon at the airport, we boarded about 35’ late: catering was not ready!
