New Paper Day! https://t.co/KHWRhnZxUv I'm especially happy to see this one out in the world both scientifically (an idea I've been trying to implement for a long time) and because it involves contributions from my new research group at UIUC!
In this paper, we used data from MaNGA to look for things like Hanny's voorwerp in post-starburst galaxies, finding 6 in the 93 galaxies we looked at! This lets us constrain the AGN duty cycle and how many post-starburst galaxies might have just-missed AGN activity.
Call open for year 2 of the NHFP graduate student mentorship program! Current & former postdoc fellows provide professional & academic support & advice to senior graduate students writing their first postdoc apps in 2023. Please check out and share! 😊https://t.co/2wQL0iQrUx
Still in awe that I got to lead the Young Supernova Experiment First Data Release, an immense multi-institutional effort from ~100 scientists over 2.5 years! This data will help usher in the next age of supernova science💥 @NCSAatIllinois@AstroIllinois

Check out the first data release from the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE), which has discovered thousands of new cosmic explosions and other astrophysical transients with the help of NCSA's Center for AstroPhysical Surveys (CAPS) and @AstroIllinois.

Please join us on Thursday, February 9, 12-1pm, for a talk by @astrodecker on the evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes for the #WomenInScience Lecture Series! You can register here to attend in person or by Zoom: https://t.co/GeRRb2R28D #astronomy
Know anyone looking for undergraduate research opportunities in Astrophysics? We're launching a new program at UIUC: IDEAS (Illinois Developing Equity in Astrophysics Summer school) https://t.co/JhvHYgujDr
IDEAS aims to pair undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups in Astrophysics with faculty research mentors -- underrepresented is defined broadly (a non-exhaustive list would include students who are Black, Hispanic, Native American, and/or Women)
Now, this is a story all about how
A star got ripped-up, strewn around
When it wandered by a not-so big black hole
In centre of its small dwarf galaxy home

@astronomills Some local analogs are NGC 1266 (@astrokatey 's paper s), M51b (although somewhat lower mass), and a handful of other "spogalogs" like IC860 (forthcoming results by Yuanze Luo: https://t.co/Jx74zhBgbB)
Thread on a few recent post-starburst galaxy papers to come out. Dalya Baron led a paper out today (https://t.co/C8qwQozZ1D) where we look at the total IR - based SFRs for several samples of PSB galaxies.
@dustobscured @timdavisastro @kerowlands @astrokatey @astrosmercina Yes, ++ Adam's comment below. The number in the sample would probably not be terribly high, but I think we're aiming for 5-10 representative/interesting objects

@dustobscured @timdavisastro @kerowlands @astrokatey @astrosmercina It's a mix, in the sample that's in my 2015 paper and Smercina+18, they were selected to have no/little optical emission (H alpha EW <3). But, there are other samples that either use a different cut against SF or make no cut, that also have CO
