On Halloween in 2016, Hannah Eimers and a friend drove four hours from her home in Tennessee to Athens, Georgia, for a party. In the early hours of November 1st, she was on her way back when her Volvo drifted off Interstate 75—even though she was sober—and collided with a steel guardrail. Her car hit a safety feature on the rail that was designed to slow the vehicle and force the rail to curl up. Instead, it tore through the Volvo and cut Hannah’s body in half.

Not long after Hannah’s death, her father, Steve, began researching guardrail accidents. He’s since driven some 40,000 miles through 25 states to inspect guardrails. Based on his research, he believes there are about 1,000 annual guardrail-related deaths in the U.S.—virtually all of them preventable—and tens of thousands of miles of dangerous guardrails presently on the country’s roads. Now he meets with politicians, advocates for guardrail safety in Washington, and posts inspection videos from the sides of highways on his YouTube channel, TheGuardrailGuy.
