@Liamjsm I would count Ziggy Stardust in this category as well; sort of a self conscious journey through different varieties of meat and potatoes. Not much of a prog album aside from the space theme and stage presentation
@Liamjsm The magic trick on the Stones albums is that while they are convincingly rootsy they are also vaguely high concept pastiche a la Dylan or Zeppelin; nearly every song on each of those albums has a different style/aesthetic in a manner that wouldn’t be found in the source material
@Liamjsm How many trad albums that end with a gospel choir start out with sympathy for the devil though? I feel like Some Girls is the real “back to tradition” classic Stones album but even that is littered with self aware plays on disco, punk etc
Just a massive change in NYC's power grid this week. Getting almost no attention.
A 350-mile transmission line bringing hydro-electric power from Canada to NYC is now live.
Will provide enough electricity to power 1 million homes, bringing us to 40% renewable energy sources for the five boroughs. At last making up for the loss of Indian Point nuclear power plant, which used to provide 20% of our power.
The Champlain Hudson Power Express took more than 12 years to build. It was a tough political fight. Now we need to win many more fights like this.
Lulu King Saxon's "Uptown Street" (1890, at the Ogden Museum) gives an idea of what much of uptown New Orleans looked like after the plantation subdivisions of the 1810s-1850s, but before the full urbanization of the 1890s-1910s.
This week I came across the obituary of a photographer named David Plowden. I was unfamiliar with his work, but decided to browse his website after reading that he specialized in photos of trains and industry.
I’m not much of an art guy, but these photos are astonishing. (1/4)
Keith David gets emotional and says he’s “living his dream” while accepting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“I started out as a singer, then I wanted to be a preacher, and I wanted to be a lawyer and a bank president. Then I discovered I could be an actor and be all those things.”

@conorsen@TheStalwart I loathe waiting in line for food etc but as a fan of brick and mortar record + bookstores, online shopping could never replace the rush of finding something you have long been looking for, even if it isn’t that rare
