We are recruiting 2 PhD students @ the University of Bologna to study neuron evolution in mosquitoes and non-bilaterian animals using single-cell genomics, and computational biology. Plus, Bologna is hard to beat scientifically and gastronomically. info: https://t.co/smg2vtmbrR
Congratulations, @BioimageA ! This pubic data repository has received @ELIXIREurope’s CDR and EDD status! Great recognition for a great resource! 🎉

This is very sad news.
Such a colossal loss of a great person and a great scientist. I will never forget his kindness and intellect. I have the privilege to know him.
We are deeply saddened to share that our friend and colleague Jim Hudspeth passed away on Saturday. We will remember and continue to be inspired by Jim’s integrity, his humility, and his unwavering commitment to discovery. https://t.co/80BMnDzriL

Supported by @Fr_BioImaging's User Access Grant Access-4942, we managed to resolve the 3D ultrastructure of the mechanosensitive nerve ending of the locust auditory neuron using FIB-SEM at @ImagerieGif with the help of Claire Bouelogne.

After years of work, our study is out in PNAS!
We preserved the active process ex vivo in the mammalian cochlea and show that local criticality near a Hopf bifurcation drives amplification.
Grateful to Francesco Gianoli, Brian Fabella, and Jim Hudspeth.

How do insects hear?
In this preprint, we reveal a stunning 3D ultrastructure of the insect mechanosensory nerve ending. Then, through separate experiments, we show that axial stretch along its axis is the mechanism that activates the auditory neuron.
