Khushwant Singh writes that he got 300 out of 300 in the ICS interview in London, in the late 1930s. He had not done well in the first paper, so dropped in the second paper, submitted a good essay and appeared for the interview, just for the experience.

The first question was "Why are you appearing for the ICS?"

Most candidates said that they were interested in administration or that they wanted to serve the British government.

Khushwant said "I hear the salary is pretty good!" There was laughter around the table.

The second question was "We notice you are doing Bar-at-law also, have you ever been to a British court of Justice?"

Khushwant:" Yes Sir, I have been to the Old Bailey"

Q: "And what did you see ?"

KS: "Sir I saw that cases which drag on for six months in India, are decided here in 40 minutes"

Q: "So what is you conclusion ?"

KS: " "Sir, I wonder how British lawyers make a living ?"

Another big laugh around the table.

The final question from Harold Laski: "How many guns salute is fired when the Viceroy's wife delivers a male child?"

KS: " I don't know how many guns salute is fired but I know that the ADC is fired".

Huge laughter around the table. What a fantastic presence of mind.

#Guide is one of Hindi #cinema’s boldest films. On the surface it looks like a love story, but at its heart it’s about a man searching for meaning, and a woman searching for freedom.

Dev Anand plays Raju, a tourist guide in Udaipur. He’s charming, talkative, and good at selling illusions. Life is easy for him until he meets Rosie, played by Waheeda Rehman. Rosie is trapped in a loveless marriage to an older archaeologist who doesn’t value her. She has a fire inside her, a need to dance, to create, to live on her own terms. Raju sees that fire and falls for her, but more than that, he becomes the person who helps her break free.

When Rosie leaves her husband to become a dancer, society is not ready for it. In the 1960s, Hindi films usually showed women who sacrificed and men who were always right. ‘Guide’did the opposite. It said that wanting more from life is not wrong. It showed female desire without judging it. It showed a man who lies, who cheats, who fails, and yet still wants to be good.

As Raju loses Rosie and everything else, he drifts. He pretends to be a spiritual man to survive. What starts as a trick slowly turns into something real. People start believing in him. Villagers come to him for hope during a drought. And Raju, the sinner, begins to carry the weight of being called a saint. The film asks a difficult question: What is the difference between a real holy man and someone who is just playing the part? Is faith about the person, or about what people need to believe?

Vijay Anand directed the film with great care. He didn’t give easy answers. He let the characters be messy. Raju is not a hero. Rosie is not a perfect victim. Both make mistakes. Both grow. The story moves between love, guilt, art, and spirituality without ever becoming preachy.

More than a romance, Guide feels existential. It’s about illusion and truth, about how we perform roles in life until we start becoming them. It’s about redemption that doesn’t come with applause, but with quiet sacrifice.

At a time when Hindi films showed only “perfect” heroes and sacrificing women, Guide broke the rules. It talked about female desire, ambition, and choice without judging them. As Raju loses everything, he pretends to be a spiritual man to survive. But what starts as a lie slowly turns into responsibility when people start believing in him.

Even today, Guide feels modern. It refused to divide people into only good or bad. It blurred the line between sinner and saint. And in doing that, it gave Hindi cinema one of its most human stories.
