Shilla (not real name)shared that she used to feel embarrassed and angry when her mother shouted at her for not washing the dishes while her friends were present. She would shout back to show her friends that she could also speak back.
She says she is now realising that shouting back is disrespectful and is learning to do the right thing at the right time. She plans to complete her chores before her mother asks, creating time to spend with friends who can advise her and encourage respectful communication with her parent.
A male participant reflected: “Nze gwe mulaba wano, omuntu bwe yanvumanga, nange nnamuvumanga nga sisoose kufumiitiriza.Kati ngenda kusooka okukkakkana ne ndowooza nga sinnayogera.” This translates as (“Me, the person you see here, whenever someone insulted me,I would insult them back without thinking. Now I have learned to calm down and think before speaking.”).
A female participant shared that she previously kept her problems to herself for fear of gossip. She now intends to identify a trusted friend for support and also work on becoming a trustworthy friend to others by listening, respecting their privacy, and offering support.
These reflections among others emerged during Day 2 of the Life Skills Seminar at UYDEL Masooli Rehabilitation Centre, involving 20 young people aged 13–25 with history of involvement in crimes, violence, drug use among other vulnerabilities , with support from Sida and WFAD. Sessions completed the remaining sections of Module Two, “Self-Awareness and Self-Esteem,” covered Module Three, “Understanding Emotions and Wellbeing,” and introduced selected sections of Module Four, “Communication and Assertiveness.”
Through group work, presentations, and role-plays, participants gained confidence and practised managing emotions, communicating respectfully, and seeking support.
