Luka Doncic has been talking trash to Yaxel Lendeborg all night.
The rookie already has a tech.
Luka just drained a half court and pointed right at him, talking even more trash to his face.
Welcome to the NBA.
The Lakers finish preseason with a 2-3 record, and while there were certainly some concerning moments, I actually feel pretty encouraged about this team heading into the regular season.
First off, I think the front office did a really good job surrounding Luka and Austin Reaves with players who complement their strengths. We have more shooting, athleticism, defensive versatility and size than we did last season. The biggest question now is how quickly JJ Redick can put everything together.
Sandro Mamukelashvili was easily one of my biggest standouts. He averaged 13.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists in under 20 minutes per game while shooting 54.2% from three. His ability to stretch the floor, move the ball and create opportunities for others adds an entirely different dimension to this offense. I genuinely believe he could earn a starting spot.
Quentin Grimes also impressed me, shooting 43.5% from three while bringing the perimeter defense this team desperately needed. Ziaire Williams showed some really encouraging flashes, and his length and athleticism give JJ another option depending on the matchup.
Walker Kessler is still a work in progress. His first game was impressive, but his performance against Denver left something to be desired. I’m willing to be patient considering he’s coming off a lengthy absence and has barely played alongside Luka. His rebounding, rim protection and ability to finish around the basket should make a significant difference once everyone develops chemistry.
Now, the concerns are definitely there.
The turnovers throughout preseason were ridiculous at times. Our defensive rotations still need work, and despite adding Kessler, rebounding remains something the entire team needs to improve. We also haven’t seen what this rotation looks like with Collin Sexton, who missed the entire preseason. His scoring and ability to handle the ball should help tremendously when Luka or Reaves sits.
My biggest takeaway is that this roster has the pieces to be significantly better than what we’ve seen so far. The talent is there, the depth looks promising, and I think JJ has plenty of different lineup combinations to experiment with.
Personally, I’d like to see Luka, Reaves, Grimes, Mamu and Kessler starting, with Ziaire stepping in when matchups demand more defensive versatility.
I’m certainly not going to overreact to a 2-3 preseason record, but I’m also not ignoring the areas that need improvement.
Lakers fans, how are we feeling about this team heading into the regular season? Are you more confident after preseason, or did you see some things that have you concerned?

JJ Redick said Collin Sexton was able to do everything besides the live portion part of practice today
He is “trending in the right direction” to be available on opening night, per @DStarkand
JJ Redick is making an interesting adjustment to how the Lakers use Luka Doncic offensively, and I think it could make a huge difference this season.
Luka led the NBA with a 36.8% usage rate last season, but we’re already seeing the Lakers experiment with getting him more involved OFF the ball.
Against Sacramento, we saw Luka coming off flare screens, receiving handoffs and attacking defenses without having to initiate every possession himself.
Redick is introducing more movement and different ways to create offense rather than relying so heavily on Luka and Reaves running pick and rolls.
And with players like Mamu capable of handling the ball and creating opportunities, the possibilities become even more interesting.
Luka is still going to dominate the ball, but finding ways to reduce that workload while keeping him effective could be huge.
I’m really liking the direction JJ is taking this offense.👀
Walker Kessler had an IMPRESSIVE debut with a near double-double in just 16 minutes
He’s the EXACT type of player that the Lakers have needed for a while 😈

Asked Luka about the more "free flowing" offense with less pick and rolls:
"I like my pick and rolls. It's going to be a lot of off ball. I've been playing more off ball even, last year. It's good to get off the ball, and just flow in the offense."
JJ Redick enters Year 3 with the Lakers feeling more comfortable than ever in the job, admitting that early in his coaching career he felt like he was “cosplaying a little bit” and “pretending to be a coach.”
After back-to-back 50-win seasons, JJ now has a roster built around Luka that better fits the identity he wants, and this season should tell us a lot about how good of a head coach he can become 👀

Austin Reaves says he’s thought about hiring fans to talk trash to Luka Dončić during games to make him more competitive:
“I’ve thought about paying people in the stands to just talk crazy to him, because he goes to that different level.”
