@Rectificateurs@BoneJail@bloodofmyenemi2 For some filmmakers it can make their work interesting and transgressive, for Boll its a major factor in the low effort-ness of his whole style
@Fistocrat@BoneJail He’s basically worked out a system to keep making dogshit movies while just barely staying afloat, which if nothing else is a difficult feat. It’s far more sustainable than trying to reinvent HBO for Chuds with no back catalogue revenue
@Fistocrat@BoneJail Boll is not raising hundreds of thousands in VC to try and rival legitimate legacy media companies. His early movies were made with German tax incentives, & used the money from gaming that system to self-finance ultra low budget while relying on pre-sale deals
@Rectificateurs@BoneJail@bloodofmyenemi2 Boll leaned into nominally left wing ideas (Darfur, Tunnel Rats, etc). He’s just too stupid/opportunistic to have a viewpoint other than a shock nihilism he grafts onto any subject (video game, left wing or right wing premise) that enables him to make another dogshit film
@matthew_petti The primary internal political threat to the Gulf states, Jordan and Egypt are not even armed hardliner salafist militants, it’s the Muslim Brotherhood
@souljagoyteller@MouinRabbani It’s hilarious to do floating signifier discourse about Netanyahu contra anti Zionism when he’s an actual symbolic scapegoat for liberal Zionism, where all problems with Zionism or Israel are actually problems with Netanyahu and nothing else
@HitFactoryPod For me the central problem in the film is its failure to frame Huller in a meaningfully critical or negative fashion (as opposed to wrongfully accused) despite the plot / text suggesting real ambiguity in the case
@HitFactoryPod Some of the most idiosyncratic filmmaking of its time. Not even Point Blank or Seconds wears as much Nouvelle Vogue influence on their sleeve.
@eventualforever Also non-union shoots can ask for free BG. You can beg friends and family to come for a party scene Friday night. But this is an ineffective way to shoot a scene where you need 300 people in period costume at 7 am on a Tuesday.
@eventualforever None of this is true. There’s a minimum number of background hires that need to be SAG, after which productions can hire non-SAG and almost exclusively do. COVID is what made BG cost ineffective and most productions just adapted to these post-COVID trends of shooting minimal BG
@staticbluebat Nobody’s said because they don’t know it’s a book but Perfect Blue has to be the biggest example. Novel has none of the ambiguity and play-within-a-play reality bending stuff. And Satoshi Kon didn’t even read the original book
