Today, the Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. @DeboraBarasa met with the Global Fund team, led by Audit Manager Augustine Agyeman-Duah, to assess Kenya’s progress in HIV, TB, and Malaria programs. The meeting highlighted key achievements such as reduced death rates and progress toward treatment targets, with 70% of Kenya’s performance contract aligned with Global Fund priorities.

Kenya’s programs have been bolstered by strong governance, effective government integration, and enhanced financial reporting. The Cabinet Secretary expressed optimism about reaching the 95-95-95 targets and acknowledged the Global Fund’s unique support for community and private sector health initiatives. Dr. Ruth Masha, CEO of the @nsdcc_kenya, Dr. Isaak Bashir, Head of Dept of Family Health, Dr Rose Wafula lead @NASCOP were also in attendance among others.

Today, Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. Deborah Barasa hosted the Global Fund Audit team lead by Mr. Augustine Agyeman-Duah, Global Fund Audit Manager, at Afya House. They discussed the implementation of the Global Fund grant for HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis.

On June 24, Kenya signed a new grant worth USD 407,989,068, set to run from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2027. The Global Fund will conduct a routine audit from September 23, 2024 to November 14, 2024 focusing on the effectiveness of the previous grant that closed on June 30. The Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring strong financial management and effective controls.

This week, Kenya is hosting the Regional Quantification Workshop on Tuberculosis (TB) Medicines, bringing together representatives from 34 Anglophone and Francophone countries.

The workshop's goal is to enhance the capacity for quantifying TB medicines and diagnostic commodities, ensuring a sustained supply to combat one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

The meeting was inaugurated by Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards. She underscored the urgency of their collective efforts, stating, "Tuberculosis remains a critical public health challenge. By working together, we can strengthen our systems and ensure that quality-assured medicines are accessible to all who need them."

PS Muthoni emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting, "Sharing best practices in procurement and supply planning will enhance our ability to respond effectively to TB. This workshop is a vital step in our fight against this disease."

She also highlighted the need for community engagement, stating, "Engaging communities is essential to ensure that those affected by TB receive the care and support they need. Our health systems must be resilient and responsive."

PS Muthoni called for a collective commitment to advancing TB prevention and control efforts across the region, emphasizing the importance of improving health outcomes for those impacted by the disease.

The Ministry of Health held a debrief meeting with the @GlobalFund country team, led by Senior Portfolio Manager Mr. Paul MacCarrick, to discuss the implementation of Grant Cycle 7. Chaired by Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Mr. Harry Kimtai, the meeting focused on priorities, challenges, and strategies to strengthen health systems, improve service delivery, and ensure sustainable interventions to combat HIV, TB, and malaria.

The PS reaffirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with Global Fund and other stakeholders. “These partnerships are essential in optimizing resources, fostering innovative approaches, and ensuring impactful health outcomes for all Kenyans,” he noted.

The State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards is conducting a training workshop for senior officers on Public Finance Management (PFM). This initiative, rooted in the Constitution, the Public Finance Management Act (2012), and the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act (2015), aims to enhance efficiency, accountability, and compliance in managing public resources.

The workshop focuses on equipping officers with best practices, sensitizing them to ongoing reforms and emerging trends, and strengthening their competencies in financial management.
