the mathematicians pushing back on AI say that it might help with proofs, but not our HUMAN UNDERSTANDING of math.
so I got curious how chess players think AI engines help them better understand chess.
and found this clip of Magnus Carlsen:
“the neural nets have improved our understanding of the game immensely.”
watch his HUMILITY towards these engines:
“it’s just that my understanding is not good enough. And that is useful.”
“I rarely play against engines at all because they just make me feel so stupid and useless.”

Science is not some hobby that serves the self actualization of people in a publicly sponsored job placement program. It is the systematic search for truth.
If you had an exponential amount of compute you could solve simulate biology exactly and wouldn't need to run any experiments.
Some of you will think "of course, but that's an unrealistic assumption" and others will think "no, you need experiments even with that much compute. That's just How It's Done".
You would of course need evaluations once you have a solution, but you don't in principle need experiments to find it: Experiments are a way to save compute, dating from a time when it was much more expensive.
And I think the presentation is exponential but real systems aren't irreducibly exponential. AlphaFold worked, after all.
"Terence Tao, you dumbshit" is not a judgment I would have ever thought possible before a few months ago.
Tao complains "AI is generating terrible proofs: great results, but no care for elegance, for who understands them, or for what comes next".
You've just described what you are supposed to do as a human being, fool. It's not the chisel's job to make a sculpture look beautiful; those choices belong to the mind and hand of the sculptor.
I've been writing software for 50 years. If I, a crusty old fart from the days of punched cards, can accept that I will never write a significant amount of code by hand again - that my job is steering and quality-checking an AI now - then what is *your* excuse for mental inflexibility, golden genius boy?
I'm pretty sure that if AIs actually had enough mathematical taste to be consistently elegant, and then were good enough at explanations to make their proof accessible, which is what you say you want...
...you'd be bitching harder, because you'd be entirely obsolete.
Quit your whining, you spoiled primadonna. Go do your job.
Jon, I’m not trying to diminish your achievements in any way. But your whole life seems to be tied to breaking the rules one way or another, and somehow, you’re never the one to be blamed.
one of the most interesting things about humans is that when people are honest - even in good faith - they often get brutally angry about it
Jascha at Anthropic is frankly telling students what they need to hear: there is no career security, the regime of earth-intelligence is changing and you need to transform / surf it, and it will be uncomfortable
^ this is honest and good
then this dude posts "OMG! he's EVIL for saying this!"
humans do this thing where if what someone says is something they won't WANT to hear, they get angry with the person who said it...
...and they do this INSTEAD of dealing frankly and squarely with the actual uncomfortable thing being talked about
...as if complaining and banging the table and killing the messenger will make everything better
Of course it can. Take all 100,000+ games on steam, scrape their descriptions and metadata, semantically plot them in vector space using embeddings, mathematically choose a location in vector space far away from neighbors, convert that back to a description and metadata, boom, brand new ideas ranked by how unlike any other ideas they are.
deepseek opensourcing deepinfer is a textbook baduk encircle movement masked as open source benevolence
while SV hyperscalers burn billions defending artificial 90% margins on raw compute, china is quietly commoditizing the entire execution stack to force a global race to the bottom
winning a technological war comes down to turning an opponent's primary revenue engine into a free public utility
by making hyper efficient inference the new baseline, China is forcing Western compute cartels directly into an unsustainable asymmetric trap
🚀 Introducing DeepInfer, our in-house inference framework, now fully open source!
Powering DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash at scale with high throughput and low latency. We’re sharing our production stack to help the community lower compute costs, reduce energy use, and make AI more affordable.

One of the most disturbing things for young men is how a woman will decide to end a relationship but hide the decision until the time is right for her (a tough time ends, they finish a trip, she secures a new relationship)
It is difficult to reconcile how a woman's romantic affections can be sincere while she is still capable of such calculation
That intimacy offers no immunity from instrumental thinking, and her emotions are tools that she can rationally deploy
I am begging someone to read this shit. The industry is completely ruined; GitHub crashes every day because of morons like this pushing three hundred thousand lines of, and I quote:
"Rust implementation of the Lean 4 toolchain with -olean, C ABI, LSP, and CLI compatibility; deterministic parallelism; declaration-level incrementality; and a dual-engine kernel capped at 12 KLOC."
I'm in no way anti-artificial-intelligence; in fact I would consider myself somewhat radically in favor of it, but what I am anti- is empowering demented fools to vomit infinite dreck into the commons.
Enjoy garbage world, I guess.
