The steel analogy is a terrible one. Steel is a commodity. Only thing that matters is cost per ton, so scale wins, full stop. Tokens are not fungible like that. A token generated on device is a different product from a datacenter token even if the text is same.

Mao's farmers melted their plows to make pig iron nobody could use. My laptop melts nothing. Whatever inference it does costs me approximately nothing. The datacenter is a great ROI engine precisely because it is capitalized for inference and has to squeeze the asset to pay back. There is no such math on a personal computer. It's like a motor that came with the blender.

A fractional horsepower motor is the right analogy than village furnace. Central turbines were always 100x more efficient than the small motor in your machine. Didn't matter. Electrification of industry happened when motors got embedded at point of use. Nobody runs grid economics on their blender.

Grosch's law said compute scales with square of price, so mainframes win forever. True on its own terms, completely irrelevant to what happened. PC and mobile won on autonomy, for workloads that never needed the mainframe.

Nobody serious is claiming laptops replace datacenters. Frontier capability lives and will always live in the datacenter. But the set of tasks that actually need frontier is a moving target. Today's 8B model does what 70B did two and half years back, and the floor can keep rising faster than the frontier. What a personal computer does day to day doesn't need a Fable 5 class model.

Local inference is not competing with the steel mill. It is making the personal computer autonomous. That is the unlock.
