also, most of the patients that come in emergently (at least in my hospital) are folks who got that sick because they were forced to neglect their own care dt this same lack of resources.

yes *but* given that our healthcare system is fundamentally broken and people are incapable of following up outpatient dt lack of resources (transportation, insurance, money), all we can do is educate them and try to provide additional resources for next time ♡

it’s also important to note that people have the misfortune of learning to lean on the ED because this is the only way they can receive care. private providers have the right to refuse care and hospitals (bc EMTALA) do not, so folks without insurance or payment have no choice.
