XIAOMI JUST SHIPPED A PHONE THAT KNOWS WHEN A STRANGER IS READING YOUR SCREEN

The Xiaomi 18 Pro launched in China on September 23. Its front camera looks for faces over your shoulder. When it finds one, the display flips into a hardware privacy mode and goes dark from the side. It can also switch on by itself in crowded places, based on your location.

Samsung saved this privacy display for the S26 Ultra, its most expensive phone. Xiaomi put it on the compact 6.4-inch model.

Then the rest of the sheet. A 7,000 mAh battery in a 203 g body. Two 200MP cameras, the main one and a 3.2x periscope. A second 2.7-inch OLED screen on the back. IP68 and IP69. Price in China: 5,999 yuan, around $840.

I put it next to the iPhone 18 Pro. iFixit's teardown shows 4,288 mAh, so Xiaomi carries 63% more battery. Apple's telephoto is 48MP. The iPhone starts at $1,199 in the US, about $360 more.

I think the battery and the megapixels are the least interesting part. Every flagship has big numbers now. A screen that notices who else is looking changes how you use your phone on a train, and nobody has put it in a phone this size before.

$360 cheaper, 63% more battery, and it watches your back on the metro.
