A few of my thoughts on the passing of Charles Ogletree: Opinion | Charles Ogletree inspired greatness by example - The Washington Post https://t.co/rFAqgHEz8X
I'll be searching YouTube for interviews/content (send it if you got it). For the time being, I went back to Tree's discussion of empathy from his 1993 article "Beyond Justifications: Seeking Motivations to Sustain Public Defenders" in the Harvard Law Review.
Tree was a force. He shaped the legal profession and inspired so many (me, profoundly). His trial ad program and Criminal Justice Institute set the model for lawyering skill development. At the same time, he was dedicated to his students and had their backs. Rest In Power.
"’Tree,’ his friends say, could not have been more aptly nicknamed: He stood tall, offering protection and cover, and he was a force of nature who will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.” @NPR #CharlesOgletree https://t.co/SshUe8AQ90
By coincidence, I swear, I just read the sixth Lincoln Lawyer book in which a police officer casually mentions general license plate enforcement as an important crime control measure.
Looking forward to this book. @robertltsai thread this weekend sent me down a terrific Stephen Bright playlist. This one is so good.

I believe we’ve settled on a title for the book:
DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE: ONE LAWYER’S PURSUIT OF EQUAL JUSTICE FOR ALL (@wwnorton). Look for it in book stores everywhere (hopefully) by March 2024.
Remembering my friend and mentor Jeff Adachi today on his birthday. Jeff did so much to advance justice in his lifetime. He continues to inspire, and his fight lives on through all of us at @sfdefender.
And it turns out the interim SF District Attorney's public letter supporting the expansion of community surveillance by police was written by...the mayor's office.
Newly appointed DA Brooke Jenkins backs push to expand live police surveillance, says the proposal will "send a message to those scheming to prey on our city that there will be consequences for their actions” https://t.co/FtVkU94DZB
The reality of firing progressive prosecutors and eliminating entire units that promote rehab and reentry. This will happen for data driven reform, police review, and more. Without some formal policy reversal, the work is just gone. And the interim DA appears to have no clue.
While being fired, I thought of the victims. I asked the DA what to do about a family who was flying here for a case I had. She was unaware & said she’d talk to my supervisor. I told her she had fired my supervisor. She said she’d talk to the chief. I told her she fired the chief
