@sherlock_hulmes Spellcasting is the most complex and customizable aspect of 5e and is a through line for all classes (at least 1 subclass) sans barbarian filling that role. While giving them abilities could work, using casting as a vehicle streamlines/better fulfills that purpose IMO!
