Where do the top scorers come from? -
No tournament’s leading scorer has reached double digits since 1958.
The modern Golden Boot is usually won with six to eight goals, and in 1962, 1994, and 2010, the scoring lead was shared across countries.

The FIFA World Cup did not grow gradually. It grew in historical jumps, interrupted by WWII and remade by major format changes.

From 13 teams and 18 matches in 1930 to 48 teams and 104 matches in 2026.

Is bigger always better?

The lower the finishing position, the more widely it has been shared. Seventeen countries have finished fourth. Only eight have become champions. The World Cup’s outer circle has widened; its summit remains exclusive.

The #Netherlands reached three World Cup finals and lost all three.
They are football’s great World Cup near-miss. #Hungary and #Czechoslovakia each reached two finals without a title.

Most countries get one turn. Only six have hosted the FIFA World Cup more than once.
Mexico becomes the first to host it three times.

The World Cup has travelled across five regions. Its champions have not.

Home advantage is real, but it has limits. Six hosts have won the World Cup, while nine have not even reached the top four.
And Brazil? Two times host (1950 and 2014), zero home titles. 🇧🇷

#Brazil has won the most titles (5), while #Germany, including West Germany, has reached the top four 13 times.

The 1994 tournament, hosted by the United States, still holds the average crowd record: 68,991 per match. But 2026 has shattered the total attendance record: 6.26 million so far.

Bigger than ever, though not quite the most crowded per game.

More matches create more goals. But once we normalize by match, the story changes: 1954 remains the great scoring outlier (5.38 per match), 1990 the low point (2.21), and the modern game has only partly rebounded.

Why is it that the wars get named after the attacked countries.
