For centuries, the #Balkans have been a crossroads of great powers. Three major empires shaped the political and cultural history of the region — the #Russian, the #Ottoman, and the #Persian. Each of them carried a different civilizational tradition: Orthodox, Ottoman-Islamic, and Persian.
The Ottoman Empire ruled large parts of the Balkans for centuries, leaving a deep mark on the region’s society, culture, and borders. The Russian Empire gradually entered the region as a power seeking influence and presenting itself as a protector of Orthodox peoples. The Persian Empire, although geographically more distant, remained an important part of the wider Eurasian balance between imperial powers.
For centuries the Balkans became a place where the interests of great empires intersected. But history has already shown the cost of imperial rivalries. It is time for this pattern to stop, and for the Balkans — and the world — to move toward peace, cooperation, and respect between nations.
