Wilhelm Röntgen discovered x-rays #OnThisDay in 1895, while he was experimenting with electric discharges in glass tubes filled with different gases at low pressures. He noticed that a screen coated with a fluorescent material was glowing even though the tube was covered with black paper and the room was dark. He realized that some invisible rays were coming out of the tube and reaching the screen.
He called them x-rays because he did not know their nature. He then used these rays to take the first x-ray image of his wife’s hand, showing the bones and her wedding ring. His discovery was a breakthrough in physics and medicine, and he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
