ZONING AND POWER SHARING: 6 Geopolitical Zones Were Created Solely For Power Rotation and Power Sharing by Gen. Sani Abacha.

Gen. Sani Abacha, Alex Ekwueme, and Bisi Onabanjo were the founding fathers of zoning in Nigeria, not the People’s Democratic Party. Gen. Abacha’s sole reason for adopting Chief Alex Ekwueme and Bisi Onabanjo by creating the six geopolitical zones was to ensure that power rotates among the 6 zones and eliminate marginalization in our political system. Then he went ahead to create six states, one in each of the six geopolitical zones: Bayelsa, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Zamfara, and Gombe State. These states were created on October 1st, 1996.

When people say, ‘where does zoning come from or is it the turn of the South or North’. It’s funny because as long as the 6 geopolitical zones exist, then power rotation among the 6 zones exists. Zoning isn’t between North and South but from the 6 geopolitical zones and that was what the creators: Bisi Onabanjo, Alex Ekwueme, and Gen. Sani Abacha had in mind. According to Vanguard, “Ekwueme’s reconstruction of Nigeria’s political architecture has to date not received the approval of law, but there is no doubt that Nigeria’s political transactions have been framed upon the six geopolitical zones he (Ekwueme) espoused”.

In case some Nigeria doesn't know, the ONLY time Nigeria as a nation had zoning was in 1999, where we had ONLY two presidential candidates from the same geopolitical zones: OBJ and Olu Falae (South-West). The zoning was done by the military; OBJ was released from prison and imposed on the PDP as the presidential candidate, while Ogbonnaya Onu, who was the presidential flagbearer of APP, was pressured to relinquish his position to Olu Falae after the merger with the AD. Even the new political parties that were formed preferred presidential candidates: Alex Ekwueme of the PDP and Ogbonnaya Onu of the APP were from the South-East.

In Nigeria today, appointments to political party positions and public offices are based on the 6 geopolitical zones. So why can't the president be zone-based on the 6 geopolitical zones?

I still maintain that for as long as the 6 geopolitical zones exist in Nigeria, zoning exists because that was the basis on which the 6 zones were created.

Based on Sani Abacha's 6 geopolitical zone creation, today, the Southwest has governed for 12 years (Obasanjo and Tinubu), Northwest 10 years plus (Yar’Adua and Buhari), South-South - 5 years (Goodluck Jonathan). The North-East, South-East, and North-Central are ZERO (0). It is the turn of the North-East, North-Central, and South-East to produce the president. It is not the turn of the South or the North. As of today, only the PDP has zoning in its constitution, and there is no way for other political parties to respect the PDP constitution.

NOTE: Bola Ahmed Tinubu doesn't believe in North and South zoning because he has never supported a Southerner to become President in Nigeria from 2007 to 2019. In 2007, he supported H.E. Atiku Abubakar then later switched to Yar’Adua because the former Vice President refused to make him running mate (Muslim-Muslim ticket), In 2012, Bola gave the ACN ticket to Nuhu Ribadu and in 2015 and 2019, he supported Gen. Muhammad Buhari. So, Bola Tinubu cannot be the beneficiary of the turn of the South that some people are clamouring for when he doesn't believe in North-South zoning.

Also, Gen. Buhari contested in 2003 against a Southerner (President Obasanjo), 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019 then, nobody said it was the turn of the South. So why NOW?

Yesterday at Gezawa market in Kano, during our grassroots work, we met an APC member. He looked us in the eye and swore to God he will vote Atiku in 2027.

We asked him why.

He said: “Governor Adeleke has already told the world he will support Tinubu because Tinubu is his Yoruba brother. Fine. If they have chosen tribe over Nigeria, then we will also stand with our own. We will vote Atiku Abubakar.”

That is the voice of the people.

Tinubu’s tribal and regional politics is no longer a secret. It is now driving northern votes away. The masses have seen it. They will not forget it.

Atiku Abubakar has close friends from the south, and they have been doing politics together since 1993. Many of them have become like his family members.

Bola Tinubu has close friends from the north, and they have been doing politics together for the past 3 decades.

Who are Peter Obi's northern friends? Where are his political allies from 1999 to date. Just mention one person that is known to people from the north and south and I will agree that he's not a regional candidate.

You see, the truth is bitter. Obi cannot be an overnight pan-Nigerian candidate because he suddenly thinks becoming a president is a nice thing. He never had that plan. He never nurtured and forged any strong alliances in advance. He was simply doing his Anambra politics until Atiku Abubakar made him a VP candidate in 2019 against the advice of his brethren. Today, Atiku is the enemy. The northerners are illiterate Janjaweeds. Anybody writing against this is an ethnic bigot. The truth will be clear in January next year!

I congratulate our great party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), under the able leadership of Distinguished Senator David Mark, GCON, on the thoughtful and inclusive composition of the Presidential Campaign Council.

I particularly congratulate H.E. Chief John Odigie Oyegun, Chairman of the Campaign Advisory Board; Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, Chairman of the National Campaign Council; Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Deputy Chairman; and Senator Austin Akobundu, Director-General and Campaign Manager, as well as all those entrusted with various responsibilities in the campaign structure.

The composition brings together individuals with diverse experiences in public service, politics, policy, administration and grassroots mobilisation from different parts of our country.
