I’ve always loved animals. I’m vegan, and years ago I was involved in animal advocacy.

Then life got busy. It became painful to look at. And eventually, I stopped.

Wang Wang’s story changed me. It moved me in a way I don’t think I’ve ever been moved before.

中國河南一名飼主，養了一隻體重約60公斤的拉布拉多犬。結果發現狗狗太會吃了，且因為體型過胖而不願繼續飼養，於是聯絡當地狗肉商將牠賣掉。

拉布拉多犬被帶到現場後明顯抗拒，不斷試圖躲避工作人員的抓捕，還一直跟飼主求救。但飼主冷眼旁觀一切，讓狗狗相當傷心。

由於體型過於肥胖的關係，拉布拉多儘管掙扎想逃，卻無法靈活行動。眼看無法逃離便趴跪在地上，並持續發出嗚咽聲求饒，最後仍遭狗肉商人強行裝進籠內。

Attorneys involved in the WangWang case have begun substantive preparations for civil proceedings in China.

With existing protections for companion animals remaining limited, those involved are examining available avenues to establish evidence and develop arguments that could have broader significance for future cases involving animal cruelty.

Organizers acknowledge that the process is largely uncharted territory. They say, however, that those willing to move forward are seeking to create a foundation that could eventually contribute to stronger protections and greater accountability.

Prominent Defense Attorney Speaks Out

Criminal defense attorney Zang Fanqing has publicly addressed the WangWang case in a video released under his real name.

Speaking about the incident in Jieyang, Guangdong, Zang called for stronger institutional protections for animals and greater attention to acts of cruelty.

His decision to speak publicly has attracted attention because prominent practicing attorneys with extensive experience in criminal cases have rarely addressed the issue so directly. Supporters say his intervention reflects a growing willingness among professionals to challenge longstanding gaps in the protection of animals.

Attention Turns to Japan

The #WangWang case has also drawn attention in Japan, where internet users have begun examining online platforms believed to have hosted or circulated animal-abuse material potentially connected to the incident.

Previous reports suggested that an individual associated with one of the platforms could be based in Japan. Japanese users are now exploring available channels for reporting the platform and seeking an official examination of the information they have gathered.

Organizers said outreach efforts launched on August 19 have received responses from individuals in Taiwan, Japan, S-Korea, Europe, The U.S, Philippines, India and Malaysia, who have expressed a willingness to provide expertise, exchange information and participate in discussions on coordinated action across jurisdictions.

The growing cooperation reflects the increasingly international nature of online animal-abuse cases, where material can be produced in one country, distributed through platforms operating elsewhere and viewed by audiences around the world.

For supporters of WangWang, the developments represent an important transition—from outrage and demands for accountability to organized, cross-border efforts seeking concrete results.

Whether these initiatives will lead to formal findings or broader changes remains to be seen. But for the first time, multiple groups across jurisdictions are beginning to work toward the same objective: ensuring that WangWang’s case does not disappear from public view and that those responsible are ultimately held accountable regardless of AGE and GENDER.

Wangwang’s story began in China, and the first people to speak up for her were ordinary Chinese citizens who cared about animals and refused to look away. People around the world joined them because compassion doesn’t stop at a border.

But with U.S.–China relations already strained, even something as straightforward as opposing animal cruelty can become politically sensitive.

Despite the international attention Wangwang has received, I’ve seen only one story about her in mainstream U.S. media. There are many reasons a news organization might not cover a story, but the sensitivity surrounding China may make some outlets and public figures more hesitant to get involved.

I saw this firsthand yesterday. While speaking with a reporter, I asked several prominent American philanthropists who support this effort if I could mention their names. Some said no. Because the issue involves China, they preferred to remain anonymous. We’ve encountered similar hesitation from others we’ve reached out to.

That’s what happens when animal welfare gets caught up in geopolitics: People who genuinely care go quiet, and support becomes harder to find.

We cannot let that happen.

This movement belongs, first and foremost, to the Chinese animal advocates who started it. Our role is to stand beside them and keep the focus where it belongs: protecting animals and preventing cruelty.

Speaking up for Wangwang isn’t anti-China. It isn’t about choosing sides.

It’s about a dog who deserved better, and making sure others don’t suffer the same fate.
