The FTC didn't just catch Hopper hiding a fee. It got the company's own A/B test showing exactly how much hiding it was worth.

FTC's July 2 complaint: Hopper pre-selected "optional" Tip and VIP Support charges, hidden below the main booking screen until the customer scrolled down
Hopper's own internal testing, quoted in the complaint: 15% of users paid the fee when it was disclosed and unselected. 25% when disclosed and pre-selected. 75% when hidden and pre-selected - same fee, three screens, a 5x jump
Employees called the pattern "tricking users" and "deceptive UX" in their own internal messages - the FTC quotes both phrases directly from the company's records
Tip and VIP Support fees pulled roughly $85.6M combined between 2021 and 2023, per the complaint - $67.6M of it from VIP Support, a service the FTC alleges often delivered an automated message or no response at all
A separate feature, Price Freeze, told buyers their deposit was refundable when the terms said otherwise - the FTC's own consumer testing found 45% believed it was refundable anyway, and 62% didn't know there was a cap on how far the fare could climb before the freeze stopped covering it
Hopper settled for $35M on July 2 - about 40 cents on every dollar the FTC says the fees brought in - and says the practices ended in 2023, before the agency came looking

Hopper didn't stumble into a 75% pay rate. It ran three versions of the same checkout screen, measured which one made people pay the most, and shipped that one.
THIS ROBOT COSTS ABOUT ONE YEAR OF A HUMAN WORKER
The humanoid in this video is UBTECH’s Walker S1, deployed at Lynk & Co’s Chengdu factory. UBTECH doesn’t publish an official sticker price, but third-party estimates put it around $75,000 — roughly the same as a little over one year of median full-time pay in the U.S.
And it’s already doing real factory work: moving materials, sorting parts, working alongside autonomous carts, and learning tasks used in vehicle production. Unlike a worker, the machine is an asset the factory keeps after year one — and the software can keep improving without replacing the body.
It’s not cheaper than a human yet in every sense: UBTECH itself says today’s humanoids can still be only 30–50% as productive as a worker on some tasks. But that’s what makes this interesting — the price is already approaching human labor before the robots have reached human-level productivity.

They used to rope in a coach for every drill, pay for the hours, and hope he showed up patient enough to kick the ball back a hundred times in a row. Now the robot walks onto the pavement, takes the pass, and plays along with whoever steps up - no fee, no fatigue, no "that's enough for today."
Football was supposed to be safe. Too much balance, too much footwork, too many split-second reads for a machine. Watch it control the ball in a crowded square and that excuse is gone.
A coach costs you by the session. This costs once and plays for years.
Right now it's still a novelty crowds gather to film. In a few years the only question is whether you own the robot on the pitch, or you're the coach it replaced.
