Statement by Amy Zubaly, FMEA Executive Director, Regarding Public Power Restoration Following Hurricane Debby:

“In less than 36 hours since landfall, #FLPublicPower utilities have restored power to nearly all customers impacted by Hurricane #Debby. FMEA member utilities have restored more than 80,000 customer outages from Hurricane Debby, with more than 99.9% of all #PublicPower customers currently receiving power. Florida’s public power utilities will continue to work around the clock to restore the remaining customers.”

"In response to the extreme storm system that has impacted Tallahassee causing widespread and extensive damage, the Florida Municipal Electric Association has called on its national mutual aid network to bring in more than 215 personnel from 20 utilities in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and South Carolina to assist with power restoration efforts in the capital city.

Crews are working to restore power to the nearly 80,000 impacted City of Tallahassee customers as quickly and as safely as possible. The Florida Municipal Electric Association is in contact with federal, state and local officials and is prepared to call for additional resources if necessary."

Congrats to the 16 #FLPublicPower utilities recognized with a 2023 Restoring Communities Award. The award recognizes #PublicPower utilities for their exemplary power restoration efforts to their own communities & for providing or receiving mutual aid following significant weather events or when fellow public power communities were in need of extra assistance.

These Florida public power utilities were honored for their efforts to restore power quickly & safely when called on in 2023. This not only included providing mutual aid assistance following the unprecedented landfall of Hurricane #Idalia in the Big Bend region, but for other weather & non-weather-related emergencies.

Two weeks ago, Hurricane #Idalia made landfall in Florida. FMEA coordinated more than 350 #PublicPower mutual aid resources from in- & out-of-state utilities to assist us in restoration.
