In 1848, California struck gold. 🌟

This historic discovery at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma triggered a massive migration to the American West. Thousands of pioneers (known as the “Forty-Niners”) traveled across the country in pursuit of a better future.

This pivotal era became known as the California Gold Rush. It rapidly expanded the state’s population, fueled the economy, and paved the way for California’s admission to the Union in 1850.

Now, 178 years later, a new gold rush begins with Phase 1 of the California Goldback Series.

It’s only fitting that this historic moment is honored on the Golden State’s 1 denomination.
