Long before her marriage to Prince William and marrying into the royal family, the Princess of Wales (then-Kate Middleton) took a central role in organising the memorable Day-Glo Midnight Roller Disco in September 2008. 🛼🪩💛

The high-profile charity event raised more than £250,000 for two causes close to her heart: the children’s charity Place2Be (which Catherine is now their Royal Patron) that provided mental health sessions and a new children’s ward called Tom’s Ward.

Tom’s Ward is named in loving memory of Thomas Waley-Cohen, a close school friend of Catherine’s from her time at Marlborough College. Tom tragically died from bone cancer in 2004 at the age of just 20.

Located at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, the ward is an 18-bed specialist paediatric surgical unit that cares for children undergoing urology, trauma, orthopaedic, and neonatal procedures. (So in 2008 Princess Catherine was learning about paediatric care)

For more than two decades, Catherine has quietly and consistently supported the Waley-Cohen family’s fundraising efforts, helping to ensure that children facing serious medical challenges receive the highest standard of care in a comforting environment.

Privacy remains a key consideration for the ward. As a highly specialised paediatric surgical facility dealing with delicate neonatal and trauma cases, Tom’s Ward is not suited to public royal visits.

True to her approach with many causes, Catherine has prioritised meaningful, low-profile support over public photo opportunities. She has worked quietly for years alongside Tom’s brother, Sam Waley-Cohen, using her networks to advance the memorial fund.

Even her most visible contribution, the 2008 Day-Glo Midnight Roller Disco, was deliberately held far from the hospital to keep the focus on joyful fundraising without intruding on the ward itself.
