I’ve always said this: While India solved for logistics and last mile in the last decade and today has 10m + gig workers working to make lives in India better. We’re yet to solve for their lives, career progression and rights.
Zepto and Blinkit are killing Amazon and Flipkart — not Kirana shops!
The Crazy Part? Zepto has gone from 0 to ₹10000 Cr in sales in less than 3 years,
And is on its way to surpass the 22-year-old DMart in just 18 months!
THREAD: How Quick Commerce is replacing E-Commerce🧵
.@zomato market cap $23B; @makemytrip market cap $10B+; #Infoedge market cap $10B+. Time to put the "where is the money in the Indian internet?" question to bed
quick commerce will be bigger than e-commerce in India — Indians were used to “quick” with all the corner stores all over the neighborhood. quick commerce made it digital and made it 10x better — so it’s going to stay.
are you going make money delivering tomatoes is still to be proven — $1.3B is impressive no doubt but it’s demand that existed and one that is savvy about prices. you can’t make uncapped profits from this demand by racking up convenience fees.
qcomm is here to say and there are many naysayer converts like me — who will make money on the qcomm rails is still up in the air.
India could be the only country that 10 min delivery startups work in.
Low labor costs, high density, not much big box grocery all help
Zepto started 3 years ago and has >$1.3B in sales, supposedly good unit economics
DST and @anuhariharan leading a round at a $3.6B valuation
Goldman Sachs estimates Blinkit's valuation within Zomato's sum-of-the-parts analysis to $13 billion, exceeding food delivery value for the first time!
Zomato bought Blinkit for less than $600 million in 2022.
UBS, on India quick-commerce market: "We estimate a TAM of $520bn for q-com with sector GMV reaching $34bn by FY29e or 7% penetration of TAM. This would imply a CAGR of 45% over FY24-29e vs the FY24e estimated market size of $5bn."
HSBC: "We believe India is likely to graduate directly from unorganised retail (Kirana stores) to QC (quick commerce), while Modern Retail penetration will likely remain low."
Pretty wild to see how fast the *narrative* around quick commerce has flipped within the Indian tech zeitgeist.
Feels like it went from frivolous ZIRP-era fad to the literal future-of-all-commerce-in-India in under three months.
Who all got the PS5 on Blinkit?
NGL I did add to the cart.
I guess it's one of those things a lot of us wanted but don't have for whatever reasons. :)
Blinkit seems to be ticking all the checks I had for @baabaeforlife
✅ Deliveries under 15 minutes.
✅ Going long tail.
✅ Discounted vs market.
The last point is also something they're really killing it in. Vacuum Cleaners, Mixer Grinders, Earphones, and Home Electricals are all priced extremely competitively.
An Amazon Alexa Device is equally priced on Amazon and Blinkit, with Blinkit delivering it faster.
