Eight years ago today, President Trump ripped up the Iran nuclear deal.

At the time, Iran’s nuclear program was constrained and under the strictest inspections regime in the world. Today, Iran has enough Highly Enriched Uranium for 10 nuclear bombs.

Diplomacy was working, and abandoning it was a historic strategic mistake.

Instead of building on the JCPOA, Trump chose a devastating war: Thousands dead across the region, soaring energy costs, strained alliances, depleted US stockpiles, and a Middle East that is far more dangerous today than it was in 2018.

Now, after all the destruction, the administration is back at the negotiating table trying to rebuild the kind of agreement it walked away from in the first place. If they come to a sensible deal we should support it.

But we must also remember. Neither withdrawing from the agreement nor launching this war made Americans safer. It didn’t make Israelis safer. It didn’t make the Middle East safer.
