Please don't make tonight the night you'll regret for the rest of your life.
Unlike most mammals, hedgehogs don't have the Fight or Flight Response to danger.
That means that no matter how frightened they are, they don't bite, and they don't run away.
Their response to danger is to curl up into a protective ball, and wait until the threat passes.
That's why so many get run over by approaching cars.
That's why so many are maimed and killed by approaching strimmers.
And that's why so many get burned alive in bonfires.
❌Poking a stick under the bonfire pile will just make the hedgehog inside curl into a ball.
Even if you touch her and hurt her, she won't move or make a sound.
❌Lighting it from one side will just make the hedgehog curl even tighter.
As the smoke fills her lungs and her coat begins to singe, she will freeze in place and wait for the danger to pass.
❌Shining a light under the bonfire will just make the hedgehog ball even tighter.
She'll stay silent and close her eyes so they don't reflect light and give her presence away.
The ONLY way to make a bonfire safe is to build it the same day you light it.
So if it's already built, you need to move today, before lighting it tonight.
Please stay safe, and make sure it's only the rockets that scream.
It’s a girl! 🩷
Yuki's little spicy ball of fur has a name; meet Juniper! 🌲 Named after the juniper trees of the Himalayas, this paws-itively adorable cub has been spending most of her time getting to know her surroundings and snuggling close to mom.

@miyudeesper I love how the pen strokes make it look like they're slightly blurred from the rain 😊. And as a fellow Brit the reason we never have umbrellas when it rains is because the ONE time you don't bring it is when it decides to 🥲.
@wisteriel @novieine Animal welfare is strict in labs I believe (at least where I am in the UK). And it makes sense if you're relying on these animals for important test results you need to look after them well. This isn't the 1930s anymore too you can't just decide to do anything you want on animals
@feminterrupted blanket statements like these are probably the worst way to handle issues considering animal welfare because most of the time the issue at hand is a thousand times more complex than “this should be abolished”
100% Just like there's a HUGE difference between someone who starts a "wildlife sanctuary" on a whim vs a true rescue centre ran by professionals who have the education and experience to do so.
This is 90% of the challenge in my job - trying to get people to properly read their dogs. Most people are bad at understanding their dog, even while thinking they're accurate. False confidence is very common.

@feltaglow Yess! Big agree I can't remember the episode but there was one where they had a similar convo asking about each other's crushes / partners during a battle. I remember really loving that scene for the same reason, I love seeing them being able to openly talk about their lives more
We are sad to share the loss of Kevyn, our eldest male red panda, who passed away this weekend 💛
At 14 years old, Kevyn had been facing age related health issues and was being cared for closely by our expert keepers and vets.
After spending 10 years at @HighlandWPark and fathering seven kits, he moved to Edinburgh Zoo in 2022, where he has been living with our new female, Priya. He was a favourite among staff and visitors during his time at both our charity’s zoos and will be hugely missed.
@newycrkspecial Rewatched it today and noticed this!! Interesting that it matches the end of the song too where in the film it's Ladybug and Chat Noir being unable to get together.
