Many Nigerians are ready to Transition Away, a ban on solar imports would make it worse.

In Nigeria, solar panels are not a luxury, they are a lifeline. With the current heat wave, unreliable electricity, and the rising cost of fuel, millions of households and small businesses depend on solar for survival and productivity.
It is worrying to hear discussions about banning solar panel imports when local manufacturing capacity is still extremely low. A ban without local capacity will hurt the very people and businesses struggling to cope with energy poverty.
The focus should be on growing local manufacturing, creating incentives for investors, supporting technology transfer, and building skills then gradually reducing imports in phases. Not an outright ban.
Energy access is not a luxury. Clean energy is a necessity.

As a clean energy advocate, I had the privilege of participating in the Energy Stakeholders Meeting organized by @gifsep4climate to deliberate on the proposed ban on the importation of solar panels and batteries into Nigeria. @TerseerUgbor

10% local capacity.
15-25% higher costs under immediate ban.
70% stakeholders signal that Nigeria needs a phased approach to solar localization. #SolarPowerNigeria
Today we launch a national advocacy campaign on the future of solar power in Nigeria. Led by GIFSEP, Power shift & Secure Energy Project, the conversation focuses on Nigeria’s readiness for changes in solar imports and strengthening local manufacturing.

As Nigerians prepare for the 2027 general elections, the moment for decisive legislative action is now not at the eleventh hour, but well before the clock runs out. Electoral certainty strengthens democracy, while delay weakens public confidence.
